Product Description

Review

'The Boy Who Grew Flowers, illustrated by Steve Adams, is that rare thing, a substantial story delivered through a full-colour picture book. Rink keeps himself to himself, aware that his unorthodox home life and flower-growing set him apart from his peers. But when Angelina arrives, she expects her peers to accept her differences and disability. The linguistic ability of the story-telling combines with lush illustrations in a delightful, unusual book.' --The Bookseller

The most original new fairytale of the bunch is The Boy Who Grew Flowers by Jen Wojtowicz. Rink Bowagon (see, that's original) lives on Lonesome Mountain and sprouts flowers whenever there's a full moon. A nice girl called Angelina Quiz takes a fancy to him at school, and he makes her a pair of snakeskin slippers. Romance, and a lot of plant life, blossoms. It's lovely, but text-heavy, so you have to be a reader to enjoy this one, I'd say. --Nicola Smyth, Independant on Sunday

'A beautiful romantic fairytale for a modern audience... wonderfully illustrated, a warm story for readers looking for a little magic in their everyday lives' --The Green Parent

Product Description

Rink's grandmother was raised by wolves, his Uncle Dud tames rattlesnakes, and Rink grows beautiful flowers all over his body when the moon is full. Townspeople just don't understand the Bowagons. But one day a new girl named Angelica arrives at Rink's school, and he soon discovers she has some unique qualities too. Using humour and metaphor to promote acceptance, this touching story shows us that what makes us different makes us beautiful.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Boy who grew Flowers - Beautiful story about accepting difference, 17 Jul 2009
The Boy Who Grew Flowers is a beautiful story about accepting difference and disability and celebrating those things about each of us which make us unique. It is a short but powerful love story with gorgeous illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful , 26 Nov 2008
I've never seen difference, as in from one's peers, explained in such an charming way before - Rink, who grows flowers out of his head every full moon, is the class loner, and ends up with the most popular girl in school! And the illustrations are quite simply beautiful. This is a book which will appeal to a vast age range thanks to the gorgeous artwork and delightful story.
