4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating tales, 8 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Boy in Summer (Paperback)
This book is a fascinating series of interconnected tales focusing on the life of a community. The language is rich and poetic and well worth reading. However, I did feel that some of the stories lost out on any sense of narrative, and a few left me wondering what might have been happening. That said, my favourites were "Kidnapping Kenneth", a devastating tale of childhood cruelty, "Just Right" with its strong bitter-sweet punchline and "The Kids" where I wasn't sure what the ending meant, but the power of the language in getting there was worth the journey.

One to read and ponder on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical!, 22 May 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A Boy in Summer (Paperback)
This is a magical book of inter-connected short stories that brings to the form all the complexity of a novel and all the passion of poetry. Ostensibly about growing up in a small town in Scotland, R.J. Price's book intelligently, elegantly and economically creates nostalgia without sentimentality. Price writes with compassion and generosity but with his finger expertly on the pulse of the small Renfrewshire community he recreates. This is one of the few books I wanted to finish in one sitting, and then immediately begin reading again. Like the novels and stories of Ali Smith, A.L. Kennedy and Michael Ondaatje, you gain new insights into the characters and yourself with each new reading.

Richard Price is already one of the best poets of his generation; it's a pleasure to see his first collection of short stories is as thoughtful and as technically assured as his poems. It's a classic. Buy it for your grandmother, buy it for your teenager, buy it for your lover, buy it for yourself. Then order it again; you'll want to give it again to someone you love.
