Product Description

Comedy drama series starring Martin Freeman and Rachael Stirling. Danny Reed (Freeman) is a man lacking purpose or direction in his life; he works at the local DIY store, spending all his days lusting after co-worker Fiona (Angela Griffin). However, when a freak accident occurs, Danny finds himself trapped in the body of Veronica Burton (Stirling) and she in his. Apart from swapping genders and the difficulties that entails, they each begin to discover things about themselves that they had never before realised.

2.0 out of 5 stars Uneven gender swapping 13 April 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
It's the old, "two people hit by lightning & switching brains story", only above average. I bought this because I am a big Martin Freeman fan; sadly, his character, Danny Reed, is a thankless and underwritten part, while Rachael Stirling, as Veronica Burton has the meaty, substantial role in the show. It seems obvious that the writers knew how to find the comedy of a man in a woman's body -- while wandering into some seriously homophobic territory -- but no idea at all of what to do with a woman in a man's body (what, no penis jokes?). Consequently Rachael Stirling's character shines, leaving Martin Freeman's character short-changed, appearing infrequently, ineffectually wandering about looking confused, depressed & limp. He's almost a hindrance to the plot. Having said that, I watched it all, eager to see what would happen to them, what moral decisions they would come to & how it would end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 14 Jan 2011

As there is no DVD Description given above, here's the DVD case summary:
Martin Freeman stars as Danny Reed whose life is literally turned upside down when he is struck by lightning and wakes to find himself trapped in a woman's body. Instead of being a scruffy DIY store worker with no prospects, he has swapped lives with glamorous female fashion journalist Veronica Burton (played by Rachael Stirling). This creates a variety of very difficult situations...

I purchased "Boy Meets Girl" as part of Martin Freeman's back catalogue available on DVD, without knowing what the mini-series is about. Reading the DVD case summary, I thought oh no, how many more body-swapping stories does this world need? Accordingly, the DVD remained untouched for quite some time until I finally gave it a go. Well, what can I say, I watched the whole series in one go, needing to know how it would all end.

As usual, Martin Freeman's performance is priceless although sadly we don't actually see an awful lot of him because the series mainly follows his new, female persona. However, we at least get to listen to his voice. Rachael Stirling's "reincarnation" as a man is simply brilliant, fantastically acted by her throughout.

In other words, despite my initial apprehension I loved "Boy Meets Girl" and have since re-watched it several times.

Like my pre-reviewer already mentioned, unfortunately there is no bonus material or interviews with this DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable ITV drama - Rachael Sterling shines 8 Jun 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Very enjoyable ITV drama starring Rachael Stirling and Martin Freeman. Rachael Stirling in particular shines in the 'male' role. For me, one of the best ITV dramas in ages and ages. Angela Griffin / Paterson Joseph / Marshall Lancaster were also very good in their roles.

The DVD contains the four episodes and that is it (always good to get some bonus material / interviews etc but sadly not in this case).

The music was also different in places..

Having always been a fan of body swap films I just had to see this despite my usual aversion for British TV serials. I thought it was a great series, Rachael Sterling particularly shines, and it is her we see most of. I don't know how she did it but she actually had me as a viewer convinced it was a man in a woman's body, she didn't just manage the lumbering awkardness of a man out of place, but also the facial expressions. I even found myself wondering what would it be like for something like this to really happen? Which is perhaps the thing which hooks viewers into this genre.

The story kicks straight into the swap scenario with virtually no preamble, and only vague hints of the problems each character is experiencing. There are some funny moments with Rabbit vibrators, underwear and high heels, but these aspects of the story are not over played. Instead it is the characters and story progresssion which is the main focus, and this is well done as the story spins out at a good pace.

The ending is pretty much as expected, but only half finished in my oppinion. And left me with the feeling that I wanted to know more just to tie it all up. This is my reason for the 4 stars rather than 5 which the rest of the story deserves.
