Synopsis
Two novels which mark the beginning and the end of the famous writing partnership of Orton and Halliwell. "Lord Cucumber" is a camp pastiche of a "Mills and Boon" romance, set on a cruise ship in the isles of Greece. "The Boy Hairdresser" depicts the tortured relationship of two "Angry Young Men".

5.0 out of 5 stars A Scary portent of the future - for Joe and Kenneth, 11 Dec 2005
By Mr. P. Toni "Mr Sloan" (Wolverhampton) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In real life Orton was killed by Halliwell, then Halliwell killed himself.

In the book they co-wrote more than a decade earlier, there are some chilling sentences:

Some say Donelly in the book was really Halliwell...

"With remarkable veracity he saw all the dreary squalor which must one day be ended. If Peterson were dead, he (Donelly) could end it now"

"one day he would show them, he could afford to wait"

"Donelly watched the grin on his face, and saw, as though reflected in glass, the final situation from which he would be unable to squirm"

"I'll stick to you like glue, I'm not an easy habit to break"

Was Halliwell already contemplating killing Orton in 1956? Was the book a lesson about the future Joe should have heeded?

As a peice of forensic phycology it is fascinating.

On a literary level, you read this and realise Orton would have written some truly fantastic novels had he lived.
