Product Description

Product Description

"You're in the Air Force now!" Screamed the corporal drill instructor, and with those words a boyish adventure suddenly turned into reality. There was no turning back after accepting the Queen's shilling - even if you were only 15 years old. But the boy had more to fear from his peers than from the drill instructors. An underground culture ruled by night, as he and the other boy-recruits struggled through rigorous physical and technical training by day. This life was not without adventure - the mule-like kick of a Lee Enfield rifle against a young shoulder; the experience of a first flight; outdoor life under canvas at summer camp; performing at the Royal Tournament and the ever-present girls attracted to the uniform.

Boy Entrant 12 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
A very good read especially for those of us who were also Boy Entrants. Brian Carlin has amazing recall and, despite a couple of minor inaccuracies, the detail takes one back to those interesting days. Would also be of interest to anyone who has served in the forces.

What a joy to read. 29 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
Not only was I 29th Entry at St Athan but I know Brian!! What a life we lived, from children to men in a very short 18 months training.
I picked up the book and sat in my home office chair and began reading to relive the every day experiences again, from exiting the train at Gileston Station to our final passing out parade inside the Drill Hall, watched by our nearest and dearest,as it poured down outside, but I rush. I could not put it down, his experiences had been mine from 'square bashing' to 'wings' from 'bulling' to 'senior entries' and the joy of becoming 'The' senior entry. How did we do it, in some cases I don't know, but we enjoyed every moment of the journey, and you will too if you read this 'factual' experience. Tragically the 29th Entry are now, like me, in our seventieth year of our lives, but we had a great time in the Royal Air Force Boy Entrants and I commend this epistle to you.

Boy Entrant 30 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I like Brian was also in the 29th entry but I was stationed at RAF Cosford. The book is very well written and soon started to bring flooding back memories of my own. How Brian could recall all that detail after 50+ years is amazing! Wish my grey cells would work as well as Brian's, maybe it was the Irish blood!

Well worth the buy especially if you are an ex 'Boy' or are interested in how the RAF trained the backbone of it's serving members during the later part of the 20th century.

Well done Brian!
