Product Description

CD Description
'Box Of Secrets' is the debut album from Brighton-based duoBlood Red Shoes. Taking influence from the likes of Nirvanaand PJ Harvey, Steven Ansell (drums/vocals) and Laura-Mary Carter (guitar/vocals) create a sound that can switch from lightning fast indie rock 'n' roll to soft pop in a heartbeat. Catchy hooks and clever guitar patterns make this a great first outing for the band. Singles include 'Say Something, Say Anything'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blood Red Snooze?, 16 April 2008
By M. J. Axtell "Jimmy Luxury" (Exeter) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm the first? Seriously? In a music market dominated by pop rock bands and here today gone tomorrow youth acts, a 26 year old electronic music fan is getting the first review of this? Come on people, this is actually a good band for once! Make an effort!

The last 3 records I bought were:
Trentemoller - The Last Resort (Electronic)
The Village Callers - "Live in 1969" (Funk and Soul)
An opera CD (I forget which one) (Opera)

I don't really know how I happened across this one, the whole of contemporary rock has largely passed me by, so there's probably more out there like this. As far as rock goes I would rate Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's Howl as my favourite rock record of all time, getting a 6 out of 5, as it seems like such accidental genius, and I really love the Duke Spirit, Autolux and a bit of Melt Banana, but thats it really. Rock has become quite throw-away in recent years, but this is rather good. Not that different, just done much better than the rest I have heard.

They're like a photo negative of the White Stripes, what with strumming duties being more than ably applied by their very lovely female lead singer/guitarist and terrific drumming prowess and vocals being supplied by the male half of the duo. Its a lovely wall of sound they make, that sounds suspiciously like the Arctic Monkeys and White Stripes at times, but I forgive them. They really are much better than those bands and should be a big group, if not in number. Their ability to play their instruments to their maximum ability and sound like a 4, even 5 piece band is very impressive.

It makes a nice change to hear female vocals and lead guitar like this, which is probably why I'm also a fan of the Duke Spirit, but you can tell the age gap between the two groups quite evidentally in the writing style. They sound like a band very keen to show they have some substance, which they do, but age and wisdom will improve their ability to convey it.

This is one great little band that surprised me, and I would gladly sacrifice going to see a bigger band at a festival, just for the curiosity as to how they would pull it off live.

Some great little pop tunes will come out of this band for many years to come, record company permitting. And they fu***ng rock.

Good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible but samey, 27 April 2008
By S. Murray - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This album should have come out almost a year ago, but legal issues and foot dragging from the label have delayed, and as a result, it's been basically dumped on the market without any marketing or promotion. As such, it will probably go largely forgotten.

This would be a real shame, though: the Box of Secrets contains some incredible tunes: the songs in the middle in particular are incredible, from the storming "I Wish I Was Someone Better", through the yelping of "Take the Weight" and "ADHD", the American alt-rock inspired "This Is Not For You" and the danceable "It's Getting Boring By the Sea".

Where this album suffers though is at the opening and closing - generic slowies that all blend into each other. If you can get past these, though, Box of Secrets is a very strong début album from an interesting band.

The only other album I've written a review for is "Favourite Worst Nightmare", that should say it all. This album is amazing.
