Product Description

Product Description
This epic story of Sherman, Dorothy, Ed, Stephen, Jane, and Mr. Flavor is not to be missed. Alex Robinson's completely natural and inspiring knack for dialogue has made his story of dreary jobs, comic books, love, sex, messy apartments, girlfriends (and the lack thereof), undisclosed pasts, and crusty old professionals one of the most delightful and whimsical graphic novels to hit the stands in years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life in the City, 21 Nov 2001
This book contains every single issue ever released of Alex Robinson's Box Office Poison, which is in itself an amazing fact. Robinson's story about young adults living and loving in New York can appeal to many readers for different reasons.

Two best friends, Sherman the bookstore clerk and Ed the cartoonist, are trying to get by in the Big Apple. Both of them are very ambitious, the first wants to one day become a writer, while the latter wishes to be a comic book artist one day. Robinson soon starts introducing new characters, and from it's very onset, BOP is in essence a comic about relationships. We get to see Sherman, struggling with his daily job, Ed as he becomes the assistant to a major comic artist etc.
Sherman and Ed evolve throughout the book, and when you turn the last page of the book, you'll get the feeling you really "know" these characters.

Alex Robinson's cartoon style might not appeal to everyone, but it really suits the story well. If you're really not into the b&w cartoon style, you might not appreciate the art in this book, but it really conveys the overall mood of the story quite well. This book is heavily recommended to people who liked movies such as Clerks, Chasing Amy, Reality Bites, or books like High Fidelity. The relationship comedy & drama also reminds me of comics like Terry Moore's Strangers In Paradise, and fans of that book will probably love this one too !

4.0 out of 5 stars MOVING AND ENGAGING, 21 Dec 2008
By Francis H. Marshall (Llanidloes, Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I started by being a bit put off by Robinson's slightly cute cartooning style, and thinking this was just a graphic version of a first novel- someone who hasn't done anything of interest thrilled by the fascination of their own lives and writing in self absorbed detail about their first job and bohemian friends. And in a way both criticisms are relevant to BOP. The drawing style can be cloying- although it gets better and better as the series develops. And the subject matter can be a bit self indulgent. Personally I cannot stand books about writers, or films about film makers, so I found BOP self indulgent in the constant attention it pays to the very small and overly self referential world of comics- half the characters are comic writers or artists or involved in the fan world. The struggles of a bunch of pretentious arty types on Park Slope...who cares? It's like Friends with ugly people and no laughs.

But - and here's is the real but - it was gripping and totally involving, dragging me fully into identifying with the characters. I found myself moved and excited. The art is actually remarkably clever at suggesting the nuances of body language and expression. I spent a whole weekend in this world and felt deeply sad when it ended and I had to pull myself free. BOP shows that Alex Robinson is one of the very best in this medium and like Ware, Bechdel, Seth, Tomine, Modan, Clowes- maybe just a few others- is able to create characters that live and breathe...I highly recommend this book.
