3.0 out of 5 stars Total beginners bowling guide 20 Sep 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I have a "Surfers Start-Up", and this proved very much along the same lines, as in, it is for the complete novice; meaning, if you've only "chucked" the ball down the lane, this will help, as it shows how to approach, and throw a basic hook shot (right&left handed), and explains the reasons why. What it misses is a guideline telling you WHY your ball is going left right and everywhere. It shows pictures of bad form, but doesn't explain what result the bad form gives. Worth it for the beginner

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Fundamentals for Beginners or Returners. 26 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
When asked to go bowling again, after not having done so in over twenty years, I found my game had simply disappeared. I was a beginner again. This little book, lavishly illustrated, written with wit and humor, put those pesky little fundamentals back in perspective. Bowling is fun, and Werner's book reminds us that it's fun, or should be.
Werner gives a brief history of the sport, some prominent bowlers which will surprise a number of people, and some solid techniques to get your game back in shape with very little effort. He also gives a very useful table of common errors, and suggested corrections.
But most of all, Doug Werner reminds the reader that the way to learn to bowl is to go bowling. Read the book, then get out there and knock `em down.
A bargain at Amazon's price, this book will delight any beginner, and is invaluable to the rookie or out of practice bowler. Five stars aren't enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone new to bowling 18 Dec 2002
By dasn0wman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is what every non-fiction book should be. Brief, to-the-point, and effective. And this book is very brief. You may probably be able to read it in a half hour and then head straight to the alley and practice. This book is very clear and provides easy-to-follow pictures, too. I understand everything the author is trying to say. Lastly, this book is effective because I followed its exact instructions and I'm able to bowl with a nice hook, something I always wanted to know how to do. Although you won't be able to learn more advanced skills or more fancier hooks, this is not suppose to be a comprehensive guide to bowling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended for would-be bowlers 29 Mar 2008
By Kai Wu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The author takes the effort to filter out the technical junks that might confuse new bowlers or people who are interested to take up the sports. All you need to know to get started is there. But it's a little pricey for a thin paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great starting off point 6 Sep 2005
By MJW - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have always enjoyed bowling, but never had any training. I am joining a league, and want to bowl better. This book taught me a lot. I practiced the "shadow bowling" technique at home, and on my next outing to the lanes - I improved my average by 40! (from a 150 to a 194)

4.0 out of 5 stars So THAT'S How Its Done 7 April 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book lived up to its promise. I am brand new to the 'real' way to bowl, and I found this book very helpful. The format is great. I think that the book would do any newcomer some good. There is a style to Werner's writing that can only be termed 'relaxed.' I am trying to develop what I have learned from this book. It is a great springboard into the sport.
