Bobby Bowfinger (Steve Martin) is Hollywood's least successful director. He figures that the only way to boost his flagging reputation is to make a film with megastar Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy). However, the only way to get Kit into the movie is to film him surreptitiously, while actors approach him and say their lines. Bowfinger also stumbles upon Kit's movie buff brother Jeff (Murphy again), whom he convinces to impersonate his befuddled brother. Frank Oz directs from Steve Martin's original script.

Not all of Eddie Murphy's post Beverly Hills Cop movies have been much to write home about, but this movie is a definate exception.
Much to my partner's dismay, I found myself laughing uncontrolably whilst on a flight to Portugal, disturbing other passengers - at the slightly un-PC misuse of the enthsiasm and naivety of the lead character's twin brother - in the making of the budget movie which is central to this story.
Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Heather Graham (and in fact all the actors in the key roles) play their parts to perfection in this movie. Look out for highlights such as filming on the freeway, red stiletto's in the car park and starlet bed hopping.
This is one you can watch again and again.

Bowfinger was made in 1999 and Steve Martin hasn't made a decent film since, which is a shame because he is one of the finest comedy actors out there.

This one is a minor classic, a return to 80's form in fact. Martin plays a 3rd rate movie director desperate to get leading Hollywood star Kit Ramsey in his film. Of course he fails, but decides to shoot the film anyway, filming the star without his permission. Eddie Murphy is very good as Ramsey the movie star and as Ramsey the dumb brother who stands in for his famous brother.

Martin put a lot of time into this film as a writer and it shows, because its very funny in places. Sadly Martin seems to have a problem choosing his projects. We can only hope that the wild and crazy guy will make another film this good at some point in the future.

as it says in the title there is only one word to describe this film - FUNNY! Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy are amazing, Murphy's character showing just the right amount of emotion and fear at the right moments while Martin just dazzles. Another great plus is Heather Graham and Jamie Kennedy. Both of these, in supporting roles, almost threaten to steal the limelight away from the bigger names. Kennedy's character in particular, as the shy guy who likes to pretened he knows it all is a brilliant stroke of casting genius. The best thing about this film is the way all the cast pull together to make this film as good as it is. If it had been made with just one minor alteration to the credits it wouldn't of worked. As it is, it's an amazingly funny film that you can watch over and over again without ever losing a laugh.

When grasping director Bobby Bowfinger finally finds the 'perfect' script, a cheesy sci-fi story called "Chubby Rain", he decides to put everything on the line and give it a shot.

Gathering together an ambitious young Ohio actress, a melodramatic stage actress and a laid back male hopeful.

Armed with a handful of illegal immigrants for a crew, a tiny budget, and equipment stolen from a nearby studio, Bowfinger lacks just one thing, Hollywood's hottest action star, Kit Ramsey.

Refusing to give up when Kit doesn't take the part, Bowfinger and his crew do whatever it takes to complete the flick - secretly filming Kit without his permission and using his nerdy look-alike brother to fill in for remaining scenes....

Just as it was looking like there was no coming back for the two comedians, Murphy and Martin hit us with this.

It's one of the best satires of the Hollywood machine in years, and precedes the awful Tropic Thunder by nine long years.

There is a lot of fun to be had here. Murphy hasn't been this good since Coming to America, and it's clear that he is having the time of his life. Sadly as of the 29/3/2012, he hasn't done anything noteworthy since.

Martin is back on form as writer and star, but keeps his role very low key compared to the other actors.

Hollywood and Scientology are ripped to shreds, and this could have been a perfect movie, id they had just left out a lot of the visual gags.

It reminds one of Landis comedies from the eighties, and there are some jokes you may miss on the first viewing.

Cruelly overlooked on initial release, this is a movie for film lovers and fans of old school comedy.

A movie producer, desperate to make his movie, hilariously outsmarts a movie star and gets him to star in his movie without his knowledge. We've all been there. How do you make your dreams come true when no one believes in you ? Or in the case of Bobby Bowfinger ( Steve Martin ) how do you make your dreams come true when you are the next Ed Wood ? Bobby's only hope in the city of angels is to attract movie star Kit Ramsey ( Eddie Murphy ), an egocentric, paranoid man, seeking help for his obsessions from his Scientology guru, Terence Stamp. Bowfinger realises his only chance to succeed is to get Kit to star in his movie without his knowledge. Thus begins a hilarious rollercoaster of the ups and downs of trying to achieve your dreams, while eluding the powers in Hollywood we call Scientology, morals and police. To make matters even more hilarious, Bowfinger hires a Kit Ramsey lookalike for the close ups.
Having spent the first half hour brilliantly setting up his characters and their idiosyncrasies, Steve Martin uses his excellent craft as a screenwriter to keep the audiences involved till the very last frame. This could have been a cliched nightmare of a movie, but it works beautifully on all levels. In Roxanne, Martin beautifully captured the essence of romance and loneliness. In L.A. Story, he captured the essence of superficial L.A. In Bowfinger, Steve Martin captures the essence of an underdog in search of his dreams without the orchestral music and dramatic montages. Eddie Murphy gives his only great performance in the last ten years apart from Nutty Professor ( also available from Amazon and a movie I would highly recommend ). Heather Graham, the superbabe from The Spy Who Shagged Me, is cunning as she is funny and Steve Martin shows why every script he writes takes a whole year of rewrites. It's a joy from start to finish.
