Product Description

Product Description

In SEVEN WINTERS Elizabeth Brown recalls with endearing candour her family and her Dublin childhood as seen through the eyes of a child who could not read till she was seven and who fed her imagination only on sights and sounds. BOWEN'S COURT describes the history of one Anglo-Irish family in County Cork from the Cromwellian settlement until 1959, when the author, the last of the Bowens, was forced to sell the house she loved. With the mastery skill that is also the hallmark of her novels she reviews ten generations of Bowens as representative of a class - the Protestant Irish gentry. Their lives were ones of fanatical commitment to property, lawsuits, formidable matriachs, violent conflicts, hunting, drinking and breeding, self-destructive and self-sustaining fantasies. . .

This is a wonderfully written book by one of our greatest 20th. century writers, detailing the extraordinary history of an Irish country house, estate & family of the Ascendency period. Elizabeth Bowen, with her rich prose & pervasive eye for interesting anecdotal detail, enriches her narrative with a comprehensive history of her family home in Co. Cork, where she grew up & of which she was the last Bowen resident. She gives a delightful portrait not only of a now vanished era, but also of her own unusual family history with disinterested, detailed & fascinating portraits of her various ancestors, played out against the background of Irish history in the 19th. & early 20th. centuries. Thoroughly recommended.

Bowen's Court 22 Jan 2000
By Bill Power - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is currently in print and available from The Collins Press (1999). It provides wonderful information on the genealogy and history of the Bowen family, who were minor landlords in the north County Cork area. The description of the last garden party at Mitchelstown Castle on 5th August 1914 (the day after England declared war on Germany) is particularly evocative, especially as the occasion set the scene for the demise of the landed ascendancy in mid-Munster. Although not ranked amongst Bowen's best works, it is nonetheless a well written blend of history, folklore and personal narrative.
