Review

Author Julian Baker, a leading teacher of the Bowen Technique, paves the way in Bowen Unravelled: A Journey Into the Facial Understanding of the Bowen Technique. After many years' experience working with other Bowen Technique practitioners, Baker set out to write this comprehensive, groundbreaking work that bridges the gap between alternative therapy, anatomical reasoning and scientific understanding of the Bowen Technique, one of the fastest-growing connective tissue therapies in the world. Bowen Unravelled explores the core concepts of the Bowen Technique, developing an understanding of what occurs within the body during treatment and providing explanations why. Individual chapters provide information for practical application of the technique on specific areas of the body. Boasting over 20 years' experience, Baker has witnessed the huge growth of the techniques' popularity amongst both patient and practitioner; the technique "has been shown time and again to bring extraordinary results with very little pressure on the therapist." Another top-notch production from Lotus Publishing, Bowen Unravelled is clear and concise, featuring high-quality paper and full-colour images. This book is a valuable resource for both experienced practitioners of the Bowen Technique and bodyworkers keen to learn more about the technique. --Massage World magazine

In this enlightening text Julian Baker reveals fascinating facts about the body, and how the Bowen Technique can be used correctly by health professionals, and body workers. The illustrations are clear and useful, and the photography intriguing. The best thing about this book is that it stands as a statement that the Bowen Technique's effectiveness is due to the subtle approach to fascia and connective tissue. Julian writes an authoritative, yet warming tone, making this book a pleasure to learn from. --Holistic Therapist Magazine

Bowen Unravelled, by Julian Baker. Subtitled, 'A journey into the fascial understanding of the Bowen Technique', this profusely illustrated and clearly written book, offers deep insight into how connective tissues respond to various kinds of treatment based on personal experience, backed up by dissective evidence. --Yoga & Health magazine

Julian Baker takes you on a journey through the body, describing the steps and movements of the Bowen Technique. The perspective offered in the early chapters (covering fascia, history and anatomy) led me to believe that there are aspects of philosophy that overlap with osteopathy. The areas of anatomy are explored through discussion and an everything is connected to everything approach, and supported by images taken from dissections. The discussion about fascial connections when working on various parts of the body provided food for thought for my own working style. Bowen Unravelled is an interesting read, which offers evidence and cases for the efficacy of the Bowen Technique. If you are considering training in this area, this book is an invaluable resource. --The Osteopath (magazine of General Osteopathic Council)

Product Description

For Bowen technique therapists and any bodywork practitioners interested in using a gentle, nonintrusive pain-relief therapy, this book draws on myofascia and connective tissue dissection to explain how the Bowen technique initiates a body-wide signaling mechanism to start the process of healing and restore normal function.

With more than 100 full-color images, this useful guide helps manual therapists understand how the Bowen technique can help people with back pain, neck pain, headaches, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, respiratory problems, hay fever, high blood pressure, kidney problems, arthritis, and knee pain.

The Bowen technique, named after its originator Tom Bowen, has been growing in popularity since it was first taught in the 1980s. Known for its gentle rolling motions and intentional pauses between moves, the technique has been shown to bring extraordinary pain management results with very little pressure on the part of the therapist.

Yet until now, little has been known of the actual workings of this technique. Tom Bowen himself called it simply a "gift from God" and treated thousands of people without trying to understand the processes that drove his results.

This book fills in the gap in scientific understanding by explaining in anatomical terms what happens during a Bowen technique treatment. Author Julian Baker shows how traditional anatomy fails to fully explain the complex biomechanical relationships that make up human movement. Each move of the technique is analyzed in depth, with an emphasis on the role of fascia and connective tissue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bowen Therapy an explaination 1 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A fascinating book in to the evidence behind Bowen Therapy. It does not concentrate so much on the moves, as the affects the moves have on the body, explaining the how and why behind the therapy. The book has detailed colour diagrams and photographs throughout, including dissections and explains everything it covers clearly and more importantly in understandable English.

3.0 out of 5 stars . A good follow on book about Bowen and Fascia 8 Jan 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Good for Students of Bowen and an insight into fascia and discoveries during dissection. Maybe too much personal opinion
and chitchat as opposed to text book but nevertheless readable. Excellent chapter on taking notes and observations and
very important to students and therapists alike. Comprehensive bibliography

Appreciate having some science to back up the wonderful results that all we Bowen Therapists see in our work. The Bowen Move is unique and just happens to be a great way to work with fascia!
5.0 out of 5 stars A great book 24 May 2014
By Jennifer Mitchell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It is definitely a great book on Bowen, and seems to be well written. There are many illustrations and detailed info in this book. There are also 14 cadaver photos, which I did not enjoy seeing. But, I take this as a sign that the author is really into his work, and wants us to benefit from the same things that have helped him to understand the body.
