Product Description

Welcome to Darmid, where magic is a sin, fairy tales are contraband, and the people live in fear of the Sorcerers on the other side of the mountains.

Rowan Greenwood has everything she's supposed to want from life—a good family, a bright future, and a proposal from a handsome and wealthy magic hunter. She knows she should be content with what she has. If only she could banish the idea that there's more to life than marriage and children, or let go of the fascination with magic she's been forced to suppress since childhood.

When Rowan unknowingly saves the life of one of her people’s most feared enemies, that simple act of compassion rips her from her sheltered life and throws her into a world of magic that’s more beautiful, more seductive, and more dangerous than she ever could have imagined.

Rowan might get everything she ever dreamed of—that is, if the one thing she's always wanted doesn't kill her first.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully exciting read 4 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story blew my mind - I loved it! I don't read a huge amount of fantasy novels, but this certainly makes me want to read more.

It's the story of Rowan Greenwood, a young woman who's in love with the idea of magic and finds herself taken away from everything she knows and thrown into a dangerous world, where each day she faces may be her last. Having unknowingly saved the life of her one of her people's worst enemies, Rowan finds herself powerless to help herself as she begins a journey. She doesn't know where it will end.

I don't want to say any more than that in case I give away the plot. But this novel was wonderful, so incredibly imaginative, with a plot that constantly twisted and turned and two main characters who I absolutely loved. Rowan especially was an endearing character, brave and selfless. Aren, although flawed, was an amazingly complex character. By the end of the story, I felt as if I knew both of them well.

The world that Sparkes has created is wonderfully colourful, memorable and vivid. I thought her descriptions were fantastic and they drew me right into the world. I liked the whole history to that world that she's given us and it makes me realise that a lot of thought must have gone into depicting it. It's certainly paid off - the countries that Rowan and Aren travel through are not to be soon forgotten.

I won't forget this book for a long while and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait to see what happens next... 22 Aug 2014

For my summer reading I was saving up books by authors I knew I loved, but I just couldn’t resist giving Kate Sparkes debut novel a go. I really enjoyed it. The characters felt so real and I was with Rowan every step of the way, willing her to make the right decisions and take me on an adventure.

In a world full of magic, Rowan lives in Darmid, the one country that has banned it. She’s fascinated and seeks out fairy tales and every hint of magic she can find, though she has to hide it for fear of being accused of heresy.

Aren isn’t only a Sorcerer, but a member of the royal family in a neighbouring country. He comes to Darmid to kidnap a magic user for his brother, but along the way he meets Rowan and then…

I got into the book quickly and was keeping everything crossed that Rowan would get out there, away from the restrictive social structures of Darmid, and find her magic. Aren was a dangerous companion but irresistible and I kept everything crossed that she would stick with him.

Then the mermaids arrived and for me everything turned up a notch. I got completely lost in the story and loved the magic of the world they entered with their watery friends. Who could resist?

Bound is a great debut fantasy novel and I’ll certainly be following Kate Sparkes to see what she writes next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical 25 Aug 2014

I just finished this book and absolutely loved it - I can't wait for the sequel! Very well-drawn, real characters and excellent world-building, just enough romance without turning off people who dislike it in sci-fi or fantasy books (like me), and a captivating storyline. I can't recommend this highly enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buckets of fun! 2 July 2014
By Celine Jeanjean - Published on
In the interest of full disclosure, I received a free copy of Bound in exchange for an unbiased review.

That said, it's a book I very much enjoyed. The two main characters, Rowan and Aren, have great chemistry. The author has managed the difficult task of making the characters feel both real and endearing, but also fun to follow and at times just plain funny.

The story gives a fresh take on a fantasy world where "fairyland" exists, and I found Rowan's journey to be rather different from a lot of the books out there, making it a refreshing read. There is a real sense of wonder and discovery (thanks to a richly imagined world and some beautiful descriptive writing), but the story is grounded by the characters' struggles which felt very human and relatable.

What I loved most about the book though, were those small moments when the author hints at the conventions of fairytales, only to turn them on their heads, or even at times poke fun at them. Bound is a modern fantasy story with a whiff of fairytale, served up with a healthy dollop of humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical! 26 Jun 2014

Enchanting from start to finish. "Bound" is a must read.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review

Sparkes is an incredibly imaginative writer who has created a vivid and shimmering world with an intricately woven history that is both wholly believable and completely captivating. The protagonist, Rowan, is strong, insightful, generous, romantic, and funny. Sparkes' beautiful descriptive language, and informal sense of humour in the dialogue made Rowan seem so real. I felt connected to her and her struggles, and I am excited to see how her story continues in the next two books. It was refreshing to read about a female character who is tenacious and strong and is able to hold her own against a powerfully magical male protagonist. Their love story is compelling and endearing.

The many levels and layers of conflict in the plot make the story interesting and complex, but Sparkes writes with great clarity and intention so the story never seems to meander. The story unfolds at a pace that keeps you completely hooked.

Lately I've noticed that many authors in the Young Adult Fantasy genre are shying away from the creation of imaginary worlds. Protagonists all seem to hail from recognizable cities, and seem to deal with fairly mundane (and very human) conflicts. Occasionally they dip their toes in the magic pool, but it's not the focus of the story. After reading so many of these teen novels (with just a hint of magic) I found Kate Sparkes' debut novel, Bound, to be refreshing on so many levels. The whole experience was magical.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!! 25 July 2014

Here is a book you can definitely judge by it's cover which is gorgeous! I thought the description of the book was interesting but it did not sound unique or special. It sounded like your typical fantasy book but the cover was so pretty so I took a chance. I'm so glad I did. This book was just so good that it goes on my all time favorites shelf! It is one of the best books I've read in a long time and I've had a lot of luck lately with some of the books I've read which makes the new book I start not stand much of a chance as I'm holding it to such high standards. Not only did this book compare it totally surpassed my expectations. The characters are very likeable without being cookie cutter perfect. The chemistry between characters was absolutely perfect, no insta-love. I became very attached and invested in them and their stories and thought having both main characters POVs was great. I really liked the world building/magic in this first book especially as I feel like we learned a lot but there is so much promise about what's left to learn in upcoming books. I wish I had better writing skills so that I could do this book justice as it was fabulous. There are a lot of books out there getting so much attention that aren't even 1/2 as good as this book so I hope readers will take a chance as they really missing out on a great story with wonderful characters! I couldn't put this book down & it is #1 on my wish list for sequels!!! I can't wait to read book #2!!!! This is a very talented author. What a terrific debut!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it! 29 Jun 2014

In the interest of full disclosure, I beta read this book about a year ago, and I do know the author, in an online kind of way. That being said, it's an amazing book!

Bound is the story of Rowan, a young lady in the country of Darmid, where all magic is out-lawed. At nearly 20, she is past due to choose a suitor and settle down and marry and attempt to bolster Darmid's dwindling population. But she wants so much more than that. She longs for adventure. She wants to see a dragon, meet a prince, do something worthwhile with her life. And also to find out what is causing her debilitating headaches.
Enter Aren, a sorcerer from across the border, in a country where magic is used to control and subjugate. Following a series of meetings and mishaps, they find themselves on the run, from themselves and their enemies.

As I said, it's an amazing book. It's polished and well edited, two things that always win me over. It's exciting and scary and romantic and funny, all in the right places. I laughed, I gasped in horror, I wanted to kick the characters for being pigheaded. Any book that can elicit that strong of an emotional response from me almost guarantees itself 5 stars.

If you're a fan of epic fantasy or romance, give this book a go. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great story! 17 Aug 2014

I'm a sucker for fantasy and romance but with the book's I've been reading lately I've been left feeling really disappointed. That wasn't the case for Bound. I was drawn into the story from the first chapter. I always read a sample before I purchase and I'm glad to say it was money well spent. One thing I need in a story are consistent characters that aren't idiots. The author succeeded. She setup her world without boring info dump. The romance isn't sappy and the adventure was so exciting. Reading this book was like going on a journey. Her writing made me feel like I was there. Before I finished reading this book I went back to the kindle store to purchase the other books in the trilogy only to find that they hadn't been published!!! Torn doesn't come out until December 2015!!! I felt like crying. The wait will be the only drawback about this story. I high l recommend it if you're into fantasy romance that doesn't INSIST upon itself and has a great story with great characters.
