The mind may forget, but the heart remembers…

A Forces of Nature novel.

It doesn’t take Hayden Garrett’s college degree to figure out why Officer Josh Peterson is the last man alive he wants to face. Not because of the council’s harebrained idea to broker peace between their clans.

It’s the sweaty palms that prove Hayden never got over his embarrassing attraction to his alpha rival. Mate with him? Nothing fills Hayden with more desire—or dread. Josh doesn’t have a gay hair in his fur. At least not one he owns up to.

Despite Josh’s reputation for being a connoisseur of female flesh, he’s always cared about Hayden. In a different world, they might have been friends. Now, face to face after five years, the bitterness in Hayden’s eyes fills Josh with regret for what could have been—should have been.

As Hayden and Josh journey through rituals—and intimacies—that will knit their souls for life, passion and anger flares, revealing a powerful secret. The truth about a long-ago sharing of hearts, bodies and souls that ended in tragedy…

Warning: Steamy love between two rival alpha werewolves, a pregnant moon that inspires mating urges, and one shy guy who knows exactly what he wants.

This was a well written book, with a good premise and nicely developed characters, but I personally found the rape scene disturbing, and felt that an attempted rape would have sufficed just as well for the plot. Having said that, there's no real detail or anything, but if you find that sort of thing disturbing it may spoil the book for you - it did rather for me.

Being a fan of supernatural novels and werewolves/shifters in particular, I delved into this book with anticipation. The chemistry between Hay and Josh can be keenly felt throughout the book, along with Josh's need to protect Hay.

However, this is where I develop problems with the story. Though it is difficult to explain why without giving away elements of the story.

I never mind a story that leaves an open end, especially with the possibility of a further novel, but this story ends as a stand-alone, and in my case leaving a bitter taste in the mouth. It's not that I need every plot neatly wrapped up, but the sense of injustice that develops as Hay gets his memories back and Josh tries to 'explain' himself left me feeling quite cold towards Josh. Not to mention wondering how on earth Hayden could possibly be happy mated to such a person - let alone how Josh's pack would react if they ever found out the truth (how do you trust an Alpha that doesn't trust you?).

Don't get me wrong, this is a beautifully written story, and the characters come to life on the pages - your heart aches for what the characters have been through - but on the other hand, this is then betrayed by how (in my opinion) unrealistically Hayden forgives Josh, something I would never be able to do and found myself imagining a new character that would beat some sense into Hay (or just beat up Josh for him).

A Refreshing Take on the Werewolf Tale 30 Mar 2010

Bound by Nature is the second story by author Cooper Davis. And along with her first story, Boys of Summer (also released by Samhain), it proves that Cooper is an extremely talented and refreshing voice in the world of m/m fiction.

Bound by Nature is the story of 2 alpha werewolves, Hayden and Joshua, that have to mate in order to secure peace between their rival clans. While the premise seems straightforward enough, the story quickly evolves into a much more complex tale. Told in sequences that shift from the current time to flashbacks, Cooper slowly reveals the complex nature of her male characters. The technique works quite well, as not only does it pace the story nicely, but since both timelines are so fully developed, you feel as if you're getting 2 stories instead of simply one. It also allows the reader to learn about the motives and reasons for both Joshua and Hayden's action in a way that feels natural, and never has to resort to the standard "info-dump." Both stories tie in together very well, and when a horrible event from the past is finally revealed, the character's actions and reactions fully make sense.

As with Boys of Summer, Cooper uses her wonderful gift of language to slowly involve you in the lives of both Hayden and Joshua. The world building is solid, and Cooper's take on werewolves completely believable. And while this is a story about 2 "alpha werewolves" Cooper refreshingly avoid all of the cliches and stereotypes way too common in the shapeshifter genre. Joshua and Hayden read as real men - Strong men, but with their own issues, conflicts, needs, strengths and weaknesses. Reading how they came together was a wonderfully refreshing and unique experience, and I HIGHLY recommend this story to anyone interested in either m/m, paranormal romance, or the shapeshifter genre.

A Long Journey for Love 18 July 2010
By Tracy - Published on Amazon.com

Meet Hayden and Joshua, both Alpha wolves and both heir apparent for their packs...their rival packs. As youth they were high school teammates in sports but they were never friends. They were acquaintances, sure, but Hayden had known he was gay since he was fifteen, been out to his family and his pack since he was sixteen, and had been in love with the very straight Joshua for as long as he could remember. That doesn't make for BFF's in any world. As teens they shared a run in their wolf forms...once. That was enough to compel Hayden to go to Dartmouth, a college about as far removed from their small Wyoming hometown as he could get. A few years later and just months shy of graduation, the twenty-two year old Hayden comes home to visit his family for Christmas. During that vacation, something happens that destroys Hayden's future, puts him in a coma for six weeks and in a jail cell for two years, and steals his memories of the best night of his life...the night he and Josh came together as adults.

Five years have passed since that fateful night, and the elders of each of the young men's werewolf pack are trying desperately to deal with escalating hostilities between packs. Their solution is to mate Hayden, now a reclusive loner, to Joshua, now an officer for the local police department. Hayden is sure Josh betrayed him five years ago, and Josh has secrets he's been unable and unwilling to share. Just getting these two Alphas at the same table opens old wounds and any possibility of them being mated seems unlikely. But Joshua holds the key to Hayden's redemption, and he's determined to give this man everything...absolutely everything he deserves.

With a plot that transitions back and forth through current events and what happened five years ago, Cooper Davis takes the reader on a sympathetic journey into the lives of two men beset by tragedy and clinging to hope. It's a compelling story for the very fact that I grew so fond of both Hayden and Joshua and wanted nothing but the best for them both. I was completely invested in their lives and story, and very much enjoyed reading about them.

That's not to say the story is flawless. Anything but, actually. While Davis has a smooth writing style and strong technique that eased the rough edges off some very difficult transitions and kept me as a reader engaged in these men's lives during some pretty dark times, not everything was so rosy. Her narrative flow is good, but there are some serious story issues that can't be ignored. The bad news is that Bound By Nature has some serious plot holes, some characterization issues, a few plot threads that make no sense in the big picture, and poses a couple of questions that go unanswered. The unanswered questions are particularly vexing, unless there's going to be a follow up (I'd love a sequel). I also had a few issues with a time span that seemed random, and several character decisions made and actions taken defied logic and seemed to deny their werewolf natures. There were more than a few places that I had to struggle with my willing suspension of disbelief, and one or two in which I lost it completely. I also felt that the fact that they're werewolves had too little impact on the development and resolution of the conflict, and very little was provided to flesh out Davis' werewolf world and mythos.

Those are pretty big issues for a story, and honestly, they're all points that usually kill my enjoyment of a book. That's not the case here. In the end, what was most important to me was seeing Hayden and Joshua more than survive tragedy, but find the love that had eluded them for so very long. Stripping away all the issues and problems and I was still left with a very endearing love story and the journey of two likable men. The journey home. 3.5 Stars.

WARNING: This story contains a rape scene that may disturb some readers. In my opinion, that scene is neither overly explicit nor particularly graphic, and was written relatively tastefully given the nature of the assault, but it does exist and sensitive readers should be made aware.

Werewolf drama 28 Mar 2010
By Lasha - Published on Amazon.com
Review contains spoilers

The premise of the story sounded great. Two men who grew up together, one gay, the other straight have to marry/bond for their clans to strike a peace. You see the guys aren't just guys they are werewolves. So, we have two great cliches in one story: 1.) forced arranged marriage and 2.) paranormal/werewolves.

However, while the story has some hot chemistry between the two leads, Hayden and Josh, the overall drama is told in flashbacks, which take away from the present day tale. Plus, Samhain nor the author don't warn for the out-of-the-blue rape that occurs to one of the heroes by some off-screen criminals (which did nothing to advance the plot), and seemed pointless. So I can only give the book 3 stars. The premise had promise, but did not come to full frution.

Wont happen, Hayden barked, keeping Josh pinned against the wall, wanting to throttle him, hold him, a thousand other things. Never going to happen. You wont have that part of me. But thats just it, baby. Josh smiled again, his eyes lighting for the first time in the past few minutes. "e;
