Book Description

1 Oct 2003
Bouncers. Reviled, feared and admired in equal measure - yet rarely are their voices heard. What they can't tell their customers, their bosses or the cops, they have now told Julian Davies and Terry Currie.

From the nervous first-nighter to the hardened veteran, here are the unforgettable voices of dozens of door staff from across the UK and abroad...the drugs, girls and gangs...the doorwars, reprisals and straighteners...the sex mad groupies and broken marriages...the hardmen, nutters, cowards and bullies...the tragedies, the camaraderie and the grim humour of a dangerous, thankless job.

From the bow tie-and-knuckleduster days of the Sixties to the huge security firms of today, Bouncers tells it like it is working the doors of pub and club land.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read. 22 Dec 2003
As a doorman or "Bouncer" myself I found this book extremely hard to put down. All aspects of the life of a doorman are covered and there are stories in here that will make you laugh out loud, and ones that will shock you.
I recommend buying this book whether you work the doors or have ever encountered door staff, or even for something different from your normal bedtime reading. You may look at Bouncers differently after reading this book. An entertaining read, well worth the money and thoroughly deserving of a 5 star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its a first class account... 24 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Having spent most of my life clubbing in London and Manchester, I have found this book to be a true representation of how life is as a bouncer. Through the pain, the trouble and the sad loss of friends, this book shines in showing a side to the modern day bouncer that makes them out to be real human beings. I have met a few listed in this book, Cass Pennant, Stilks, Marty Dee Donovan, Dave courtney and they seem in real life to be exactly as portrayed in the book. These guys arent posers, they are the real McCoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars amusing 26 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A collection of anecdotes from a collection of doormen - some names I recognised like Cass Pennant, others I didn't. Both funny and amusing and yet also highlighting the horrors that can be faced and just how exactly what dangers can await. Like every profession there are good ones and bad ones but opened my eyes to a world i only know when i am greeted at the door of a pub / club. Well worth a read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bouncers 9 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Thought this book looked ok....until I started reading it! It is basically pages and pages of small anecdotes of bouncers smashing people's heads in and being rather proud of it. There are some good little stories in there with I am sure some genuine good bouncers, but I'm afraid this book does not do the profession any good. I love a good "gangster" book like most people but there is only so much "so I stamped on his head" you can read!

5.0 out of 5 stars As Hard Hitting as the Bouncers Themselves 31 Dec 2003
By "dav99"
After reading Julian Davies' brilliant 'Streetfighters' I had eagerly awaited his follow up for some time and this has not disappointed. For this book he has cleverly teamed up with Terry Currie, whose knowledge of hardmen in and around the London area is unparalleled. Make no mistake, this book packs as much of a punch as Streetfighters, but this time concentrates on the stories of nightclub bouncers up and down the country. Some of the tales are horrific, some hilarious as tales of the fights, revenge attacks and practical jokes played are recounted. These guys work hard and play hard. Every person who has ever walked past these guys on the way into or out of a club will see them in a different light after reading this book. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bouncers.... couldn't put it down... 3 Dec 2003
By A Customer
I bought a copy of this book yesterday direct from the author and I finished it this morning. Its so gripping that I guarantee you won't be able to put it down. A brilliant buy for Christmas, although don't expect the recipient to be very socialble ;-)
Its truly amazing what goes on in the bouncer world and also an interesting insight to the hard job these guys face during a night on the doors. Might make people look at these bow tyed giants a little differently.
Also interesting to read some stories from unknown bouncers as well as well established guys such as Dave Courtney, Carlton Leach, Cass Pennant, Stilks etc etc who are all well established authors in their own right.
Buy and Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bouncers... couldn't put it down!! 3 Dec 2003

what a truly gripping read, I bought a copy yesterday and couldn't put it down!
It gives a great insight into the bouncer world. These guys give great accounts of all sorts of situations they find themselves in, some of the stories are hilarious, others show the darker side of working the doors and the tough job these guys actually do to make their living.
Lots and lots of stories from bouncers unknown and some well known such as the cheeky chappy Dave Courtney, Carlton Leach, Cass Pennant, Stilks etc etc.. who are all authors in their own right.
Anyway, a great gift for Christmas, although don't expect the recipient to be very sociable once they get it cos they won't put it down!

1.0 out of 5 stars awful 22 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I chose this book thinking it would be a good read, I put it down after 5 pages. Full of meat heads boosting here egos. Not for me what I thought would of been a different read. I tried to give it no stars but it wouldn't allow it. Waste of money.

Although interesting enough it wasn't what I expected. I felt too many bouncers were asked to tell the reader about their job but not enough detail given.
