If you like angst-ridden, discordant music striving to say 'important things', then this disc is not for you: it is packed full of melodious, happy and easy to listen to music. It is decidedly English in flavour (for reasons difficult to define)and is completely sane, charming and very well written. The more of Boughton's music I listen to the more I appreciate and like it - there is no striving for effect, just honest, straightforward good tuneful stuff.
The Rasumovsky does a good job, though a little loose in ensemble occasionally - but not enough to put you off thoroughly enjoying this disc; Sarah Francis does a splendid job in the oboe quartet. Recommended - especially as an introduction to Boughton's music, if you don't know any of it already.

I think that I was unfair to the Rasumovsky quartet in my review (above). There is only one place in the Oboe Quartet where the ensemble was slightly imperfect, otherwise their playing is excellent, therefore I upgrade the rating of this cd to five stars. (Added Feb. 2014).

Boughton's quartets are in the English pastoral tradition, but have a harder edge than that suggests, and are genuinely substantial works. He is no longer well-known to the classical music loving public, but his opera 'The Immortal Hour' was once popular. Rutland Boughton's personal history was interesting. He successfully set up a Glastonbury Festival as an English Bayreuth, performing his own operas based on Arthurian-style myth. He fell out of favour with the establishment through his espousal of communism. These quartets suggest his chamber music oeuvre is well worth investigating and I shall investigate it. Good performances.

Chamber Music of Great British Operatic Composer 16 Sept. 2004
By rodboomboom - Published on Amazon.com
Primarily known for opera work, Boughton here provides some pastoral and beautiful chamber works for string quartet and oboe.

His fascination with oboe owed to his daughter Joy being one of great oboe soloists. Here is some composed with her in mind, and Oboe Quartet and Three Songs without Words, in effect itself an oboe quartet.

It is fresh, sweet and joyous music with nice combo of strings and singing oboe, provided adequately by Sarah Francis and Rasumosvsky Quartet respectively.
