Product Description

CD Description

One of the most distinctive voices in British folk, Peter Bellamy is joined by The Watersons, Dave Swarbrick & Louis Killen on what is his best recording. As a member of the powerful acappella group, The Young Tradition, PETER BELLAMY was one of the most active artists working to reawaken interest in the traditional songs of England. He was passionate about music, from the great English traditional singers, to the prisoners of Parchman Farm and the Rolling Stones and beyond. BOTH SIDES THEN – his finest solo album is a superb integration of his varied musical interests, drawing on English, Irish and Appalachian traditions. Working with close friends from The Young Tradition, The Watersons, Louis Killen and Dave Swarbrick, Bellamy explores the richness of traditional music. Peter Bellamy, who sadly died in 1991, left a remarkable body of recording which continues to inspire musicians around the world. Topic Records are proud to reissue these important recordings from their archive as part of the label’s 70th anniversary celebrations. Tracks; 1 Barbaree / 2 The Trees They Do Grow High / 3 The Lord Will Provide / 4 The Gallant Frigate Amphitrite / 5 A-Roving on a Winter’s Night / 6 Derry Gaol / 7 Long Time Travelling / 8 The Maid of Australia / 9 The Shepherd of the Downs / 10 The House Carpenter / 11 When I Die / 12 Edmund in the Lowlands / 13 Around Cape Horn / 14 The Turfman from Ardee / 15 Amazing Grace

By Ms. M. Potter TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

Both Sides then is a marvellous release from Peter Bellamy. Peter had been famous as a member of the folk group The Young Tradition. He had a love of English folk music and recorded traditional pieces as well as creating new songs and tunes in a traditional idiom.
Before this album he had recorded and explored traditional English folk songs and created a modern ballad opera based on a true story in a Traditional English folk idiom and also found expression of English style with words from Rudyard Kipling.
Both sides then is a celebration of all these influences The album combines English Traditional source with American versions of English Traditional songs as well as other English speaking cultures.
The purpose was to illustrate that folk music is in truth free in spirit and permeates outwards into other aspects like a tree that branches out from its roots.
The result is an excellent album that fuses many influences such as English, Irish and Appalachian traditions as well as gaining influential help on the recording from people like The Watersons and Dave Swarbrick.
The idea of mixing these influences was not actually new. But it was new to Bellamy who had struggled with the idea of being a professional folk singer.

This album that was recorded in 1979 is a really interesting album with a rich sound and a wonderful mixture of influences on the root of English Folk music.

A welcome release 12 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
This CD is an excellent example of Peter Bellamy's style and material. There are lovely melodies and interesting variations of well known songs. His singing throughout has many twists and variations, which although they may seem exaggerated, show his mastery and sensitivity. The accompaniments and vocal harmonies are all interesting and excellent.
