Book Description

19 April 2010
A sketchbook can be many things: to some it is a record of a landscape or people in a cafe prior to painting them; to others it is a visual memory of a traveller's journey, more personal than the image captured by a camera. In this case, it is a beautiful record of one woman's development into a successful botanical artist and should be an inspiration to all those who chance upon it. As part of the Distance Learning Course run by the Society of Botanical Artists, students are required to keep a sketchbook. The one kept by Mary Ann Scott is exceptional. Her book covers the exercises, colour charts and basic preparatory work for each assignment, plus the finished studies ranging from a vignette of alpine flowers to glowing exotic fruit. It is a masterclass for all aspiring botanical artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars a learning experience 24 Jun 2010
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
If you ever wanted to be a botanical artist, but don't feel you have what it takes - this book is for you. It follows the progression of one artist as she follows the Distance Learning Course of the Society of Botanical Artists. You can follow the assignments step by step that take you through the various aspects of botanical drawing. By the end of the course, you should have the confidence to go it alone. The notes are the perfect guide to help you make it through and I love the colour details. A beautifully produced book that is highly recommended as a teaching guide for a botanical course. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

This is a great reference book for anyone studying botanical art, particularly for the information on achieving the correct colour tones. It is the perfect guide as to the discipline required in building up our own reference material to achieve the high standards required in botanical illustration. It is highly recommended and at Amazons price not to be missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars beautiful but quite advanced 21 July 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a beautiful book, and I could look at it for hours, but as a beginner wanting to improve my drawing skills I found it too advanced. It tracks someone on a botanical illustration course, and included criticisms from the tutors, but to my mind they were all lovely! A lovely book but not what I was expecting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very instructional! 26 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book is so useful! It was all I expected! The SBA course is fantastic and you can have a snack of it on the book. I studied botanical illustrations at college. So it is helping a lot at practice. Each plant illustrated for Mary Ann Scott is dicussed until the final painting and at the end of the book has a card shades that is wonderful! For the discuss of how to apply the color and how to construct an image is fantastic! Very recomended!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love it 27 April 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
As an aspiring botanical artist, I loved this book with its details of sketches and colour swatches leading to finished paintings.
I started the SBA course myself several years ago and for various reasons was not able to finish - had I had this book then, things may have been different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Botanical Sketchbook 19 July 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I would not want to follow in the author's footsteps, but it was inspirational. I read it rather as a textbook, as it is not, to me, a book that aspires to teach botanical illustration. Good read, well illustrated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular 12 Jun 2011
By El
Format:Hardcover
I thought this book was presented in a lovely way. I found it useful for my IB exams, and it helped me to know how to put my work together. For teaching it was good, but not the best that i've had. Some good quality work, and drawings done in the book though, and it stood out as one of the better of the botanical sketchbooks I looked at.
Well worth it.
