The rewards of discipline. 22 Sep 2006
By Samuel Chell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This 1955 Kenton-produced session featuring the nearly forgotten "Bird of the baritone" is quite an eye-opener. First, there are the arrangements. This is not the sound of, say, Blakey's Jazz Messengers "augmented" by a third horn, an addition that does little more than provide extra fire power. Rather it's three horns sounding like a little big band in textures, except that the usual riffs of most big band charts are replaced by continuous, flowing, non-repetitious melodic lines. And at times the ensemble choruses are so carefully balanced and precisely executed that the effect is that of a single solo voice.

The hard life and harder death of Chaloff, a hard-core heroin junkie who kicked the habit only to lose the next battle to spinal cancer, is belied by the expressive delicacy and sheer musicality of his playing. Often referred to as the first modernist on the big horn, preceding Mulligan and Cecil Payne, Chaloff also shows the influence of the old masters (above all, Harry Carney) in his glowing sound, assortment of vibratos and articulations, and attentiveness to nuance, subtlety and variety. As a member of the ensemble, he blends so completely with the other two horns as to be practically invisible, a stark contrast from the overriding buzz saw sounds of Pepper Adams and other recent baritone players who stick out like a sore thumb in such contexts.

Of the three soloists on this recording, Chaloff's is clearly the most distinctive voice, as soulfully rich on the ballads as it is technically fluent on the up-tempo tunes. It would be recklessly irresponsible to declare him without peer on the basis of his limited recorded output, but it would seem just as narrowly insensitive to miss the qualities in his playing that make him unsurpassed on the horn. In fact, it's hard to think of many players who so completely mastered the language of their instrument, then resisted the temptation to employ it for any purpose other than clear, honest, and always fascinating communication.

ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATS! 21 Sep 2006
By Bruce Armstrong - Published on Amazon.com

And that title refers to both the CD and Serge himself. If Serge had never recorded anything else in his life but the two ballads on this recording--"What's New" and "Body and Soul"--it would be enough to put him in the jazz "Hall of Fame." They are magnificent. He remains the standard by which all jazz baritone players should be judged. Yes, I know all about Mulligan and Pepper Adams---and I love 'em both---but Serge was the man. Such passion. I bought the original LP in high school and was awestruck. And don't overlook Herb Pomeroy's great arrangements--esp. "Yesterday's Gardenias." A masterpiece. Buy it!
