DVD Description

The court of Louis XIV, a story of intrigue, assassination and revenge. The first and most famous version of Paul Feval’s classic swashbuckling novel. Starring Jean Marais (La Belle Et Le Bete, L’Aigle A Deux Tetes, Orphee, Les Miserables) and Bourvil (Le Cercle Rouge, The Stud, The Longest Day, La Traversee De Paris) directed with flair by Andre Hunnabelle (Fantomas, Captain Blood). A film with much swash and buckle, sword fights and subterfuge all mixed into a fabulous, colourful romp. One of the all-time great sword fighting spectacles, a great cast and terrific performances all come together to create an epic tale of the cut and thrust of revenge and honour.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: French ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Biographies, Black & White, Interactive Menu, Photo Gallery, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Set in the 18th century, this French swashbuckler centers on Lagardere (Jean Marais), an adventurer whose life is affected when he decides to help out a nobleman in distress. Lagardere's comic companion Passepoil (Bourvil) adds a light touch to the proceedings. But when the nobleman is vilely murdered by a villainous courtier, Lagardere is duty-bound to raise the victim's little daughter as though she were his own. Time goes by, though not enough to erase the memory of the murder from the adventurer's mind. He decides to disguise himself as a hunchback in order to be accepted into the faction that had the nobleman killed, and from the inside as it were, plots his revenge. ...Le Bossu (1960) ( La Spada degli Orléans ) ( The Hunchback of Paris )

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but not the best version, 18 Dec 2010

This review is from: Le Bossu [DVD] [1960] (DVD)
The much-loved Jean Marais-Bourvil 1960 version oft-filmed warhorse of French cinema now rather pales besides Philippe de Broca's wonderful 1997 version (released Stateside as On Guard) starring Daniel Auteil. André Hunabelle's version lacks the flair that de Broca gave Cartouche only two years later, little helped by Jean Marais' rather stiff turn in the lead. Bourvil has little to do for the first half hour, but is allowed some nice comic business once the characters reach Spain and the story passes pleasantly with some good moments, but it's not the classic it's reputation implies. And unfortunately C'est la Vie's UK PAL DVD is a bit of a disappontment, offering a cropped 1.85:1 transfer instead of the original 2.35:1 and no film-specific extras. For those and a sparkling 2.35:1 widescreen transfer you need to find the French special edition DVD - but unfortunately that doesn't contain English subtitles.
