This has to be the best Gene Ammons on record. On the first track he is totally in charge of the blues, talking with his horn. My Romance has to be the ultimate version by any artist as he evokes passion and emotion with his interpretation of this ballad. Accompanied by a superb rhythm section, Ammons plays on all selections with a strong, soulful, funky, swinging tenor sound. This is a man at the top of his game!

If this brilliant collection of blues and ballads demonstrates anything, its that the right note in the right place is worth a million spewed indiscriminately.Tenor saxman Ammons has a big hearty tone, warm and all enveloping. His approach concentrates on warmth of expression ,melody and the gradual development of ideas. He is never in a rush and hence his solos have a sense of cohesion and structure that link directly to the melody of the tune.In this way Ammons attracts and keeps the listeners attention.

'Boss Tenor' recorded in 1960 finds the 'Jug' in the company of a wholly sympathetic quintet. Tommy Flannagan on piano provides beautiful accompaniment throughout and his solos like that on 'Close Your Eyes' are defined by their lightness of touch and inventiveness. This album is a delight from start to finish.Wrap your ears around the playful lushness that is 'Canadian Sunset' to get a handle on the quality of this set,it's a beauty. So a very consistent collection then , ideal for relaxed listening. Recording quality is superb by the way.Recommended.
