One look at Kelsey Grammer's glowering, defiant mug on the cover of the Boss: Season One boxed set (with eight episodes spread out over three discs) is all you need to recognize that this is a far cry indeed from his happy days on Frasier and Cheers. Grammer's Thomas Kane, the mayor of Chicago, is a ruthless, old school pol in the tradition of that city's Richard J. Daley; "Kane is the city," as one of his cronies puts it, and by the end of the season, anyone who tries to cross him will have been brought to his knees--sometimes literally--or worse. But Kane is not a man without problems. He's got a wife (Connie Nielsen) he barely talks to and never sleeps with, an estranged daughter (Hannah Ware) whom he and his wife shunned because her drug problems were a political liability, a host of enemies plotting his downfall, and, worst of all, a condition known as Lewy body, a fatal, untreatable form of dementia that is steadily robbing him of his mental acuity and physical wherewithal. There's an element of soap opera in all of this; simply keeping track of the sexual escapades of Ben Zajac (Jeff Hephner), a duplicitous young Kane protégé, may require a scorecard (nudity and profanity are also abundant). But the political maneuverings are even more compelling, as we see just how treacherous, scandalous, and even murderous Kane and everyone else who lusts for power can be. It's not a pretty sight.

All in all, this is very juicy stuff. Every episode is beautifully shot and directed (including one helmed by co-executive producer Gus Van Sant, whose credits include Milk, Good Will Hunting, and other fine films), with a main title song by Robert Plant. And while the dialogue is occasionally overcooked and the plotting somewhat over the top, Boss has more than enough to keep you coming back for more. --Sam Graham

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping 4 April 2014

This is a great series with lots of twist and turns. Kelsey Grammer plays a really good part and makes it so realistic that you have to remind yourself that it is all fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good performances 17 Mar 2014

Enjoyed it. too neat at the end. The great thing was that it made you forget " Frasier". To restrict it to 8 épisodes was a good idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute power, corrupting absolutely. 10 May 2013
By Sue Kichenside TOP 500 REVIEWER
Boss is an incredibly powerful, compelling and adult drama series. Hats off to Kelsey Grammer for being brave enough to portray the loathsome Kane. It is a tribute to his phenomenal acting ability that he is so completely able to cast off the shackles of his sympathetic Frasier role. Grammer is joined by a stellar cast who also show considerable courage in playing such thoroughly hateful people. We always knew that politics in Chicago was a dirty business but did any of us realise it was quite this disgusting? A brilliant series and, for me, much more convincing than the similarly-themed House of Cards - Season 1 (DVD + UV Copy) [2013]. Powerful stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 15 Jun 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
It is a gripping story, well filmed and acted. Kelsey Grammer was brilliant playing a character so far from Frazier that Dr Crane
was forgotten completely, and he was the Boss.

5.0 out of 5 stars The West Wing's provincial, evil cousin. 5 Jun 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
My partner recently discovered series 2 of this much underrated show cranked out at midnight on one of the UK Freeview channels. A complete tragedy that it's not getting a wider audience, though some of the language is a bit strong for primetime.

I'm pleased to say that season 1 did not disappoint. A marvellously dramatic turn from Kelsey Grammer. Brilliant writing, superb acting. I'd class it as a localised and darker version of The West Wing.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Show!!!! 26 Feb 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Kelsey Grammar as 'The Boss' of Chicago is fantastic. This is his best role yet and he plays it superbly.

The camera work is beautiful and visually the show is spectacular. Although the plot-line is filled with twists and turns, the story is pretty easy to follow and you find yourself being swept up in corruption, mystery and Grammar's character's struggles with his health, family and the choices he has to make between his survival in politics and the good of the city.

It is quite possibly the best series since the Sopranos in my opinion. I have lent the set to numerous friends who have all completely fallen in love with it. I watched the entire series over a weekend, i couldn't tear myself away and i had watched it all on TV before the DVD came out!

Can't wait for series 2!

"Boss" has picked up a legion of rabid/dedicated fans - with most of them stumbling on this brilliantly written and acted American politics TV show on Channel 4 earlier in 2013. And with its heavy reliance on close-up shots of people's faces - the city of Chicago as a back drop - and it being shot in HI DEF - "Boss" is ideal BLU RAY fodder. But for "UK" buyers therein lies a problem...

As of now (December 2013) neither Season 1 nor Season 2 on BLU RAY is available in the UK - only in Region 1 America. Unfortunately - both US sets are REGION-A-LOCKED - and therefore will not play on UK BLU RAY players unless they're multi-region or chipped to play all (which very few are). Season 1 made it onto DVD in the UK but not BLU RAY.

It's one of Amazon's less than admirable quirks that you can get 500+ reviews about a film - and not one of them actually reviews the product you want to buy. This BLU RAY is a case in point. The reviews are mostly for the show and not if the BLU RAY actually works on our machines.

Bottom Line: neither Season 1 nor Season 2 of "Boss" on American BLU RAY will play on UK BLU RAY players (unless they're multi-region).

Of course the real bummer is that the networks cancelled this riveting 5-star drama (to howls of derision) after only 2 Seasons - even when Kelsey Grammar won awards. Now that really is a shame...
