(New Statesman )

'Fascinating ... Longrigg avoids the usual pitfalls Mafia chroniclers are susceptible to'

(London Lite )

'In this thrilling history ... (Longrigg) meticulously traces the career of the man known as "the Accountant"'

Product Description

Bernado Provenzano, head of the Sicilian mafia, is Italy's most notorious criminal. But despite apparent sightings all over Europe, for 43 years he eluded the police, until, on 11 April 2006, a crack police team broke into a tiny shepherd's hut in the mountains above Corleone. At last they were able to capture Provenzano, just a few miles from his home.

A master of reinvention, he has been known variously as the Tractor, the Accountant, Uncle Bernie and even the Axe Man. He took over Cosa Nostra when it was on its knees, after the carnage of an all-out war with the state, and restored its power by going underground and infiltrating business, law and politics at the highest levels. In prison his human side emerged when his sole request was to marry his devoted companion, Saveria, who stood by him through years on the run.

Provenzano's story is one of passion and betrayal, told by the investigators who tracked him down, the spies who worked for him, the officers who arrested him and his consigliere at the heart of Cosa Nostra.

Good Book! 25 May 2009

All of the holes in the story are filled in quite nicely in this account. Good read for anyone who follows organized crime, the mafias of Italy or Cosa Nostra in general.
The Men of Corleone 7 Sep 2011

Amazing story about the Sicilian Mafia and the powerful grasp it has had and continues to have on almost every aspect of life. The town of Corleone, produced many "Men of Honor", but this book deals with three home-town boys; Luciano Liggio, the Boss, Bernardo Provenzano and Salvatore "Toto" Riina, Liggio's two top men. They were given charge of his operation upon his incarceration, with the idea that by having both as "co-leaders", they would keep each other in check, for example, Provenzano was the educated thinker, ultimate strategist, who would not answer even the simplest question without thinking at least 3 moves ahead. While "Toto" Riina, was the "muscle" of the cosca, eliminating rivals, traitors, witnesses! As the reader will see, these three Mafia leaders managed to live "on the lam", for up to 40 years, and the whole time, they were in a small goathearder's hut, living like a shepard. If it wasn't for the physical problems that Provenzano was stricken with, who knows, "the Phantom" of Corleone may have remained so. It's a great read, full of information on Liggion, Riina, and Provenzano and the way they lived, some flamboyantly while others were simpler.
