This inexpensive kit allows gardeners to test their soil for ph (acid/alkaline soil) Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, all of which are key elements needed by plants for healthy growth. The instructions are clear and simple to follow, you take some garden soil, add water, shake it up, leave to settle, draw off a measured quantity of liquid, add two compounds, shake, and then compare the colour of the liquid with colour charts in the instruction booklet to determine what sort of soil it is and record results.

My test, carried out over several areas of our garden, revealed that we have poor soil, devoid of much nutrient and rather alkaline. Therefore I need to feed it with fertiliser and try to up the acidity, since many plants like acid conditions. Fun to use, one feels like a true scientist! Comes in a great pack, very compact, very easy to store, with sufficient chemicals for a large no. of tests.

The kit works well but is a little confusing which powder is which. in the book they are labeled differently than on the little bottles.

This is easy to use, but read the instructions so you understand how long it takes for the results. It is not instant! And follow the instructions about what water to use. Also, collect a larger quantity of soil than recommended as it is easier than not having enough or making a mistake and then having to start again. I'd also advise that you set it up somewhere where it will not get in the way of other activities or creatures (for example cats). This will be extremely useful for the polytunnel, where I am planning raised beds so I can control soil conditions more easily.

I actually quite enjoyed doing the tests - brought back memories of school days and chemistry. So get the children involved?
