Product Description

The health and look of your lawn can be dramatically improved by ensuring it is adequately aerated. Why aerate? Soil can over time become compacted which is not good news for the grass. The grass roots are not able to penetrate as deeply into the soil if the soil is compacted. In addition, the level of air flow and oxygen in the soil is reduced when compacted and this is essential for plant growth . On top of this the level of nutrient uptake is less if the soil is compacted and it can also effect the amount of water which can infiltrate the soil. Aerating the soil means that your lawn gets a good level of air flow, water and nutrients - all essential for a healthy lawn and in addition the ability of the roots to penetrate deep into the soil is improved. Aerating your lawn can also avoid the problem of thatch, a layer of organic matter which settles at ground level. Thatch can create an environment where pests and disease thrive, which is not healthy for grass roots. For these reasons aerating your lawn is very important and this strong, durable hollow tine aerator is ideal for the job - helping to improve the quality and look of your garden. The aerator is fantastic for autumn and winter aerating and is part of the Lawn Care range which includes eight of the best lawn care products around - helping you to achieve that lush green lawn and keep it in tip top condition. The lawn care range also includes lawn spike shoes, a lawn spike aerator, a lawn scarifier, a traditional bamboo rake, a simple to use rake and grab, lawn edging and a folding wheelbarrow. 4.0 out of 5 stars Take the good with the bad., 21 Oct 2009

This review is from: Hollow Tine Aerator
I bought this because I have lots of moss in my lawn. I read that "A healthy lawn with strong grass roots will keep moss away", so decided to aerate it. Although I haven't used any other hollow tined aerator, so can't compare this with any other make, it seems to do the job well....
However...
Whilst using it, I found that the soil under my lawn was far from perfect. There were patches of good soil (where the tines sunk in & cut 'plugs' as they're supposed to). There were patches where so many stones/rocks were present that the tines couldn't cut through (I had to resort to a normal garden fork). There were areas where the soil was so compacted that the tines just clogged up (I used a bamboo cane to force the compacted soil from the tines).
I realise that this isn't the problem of the product, but just how the underlying soil is in my garden, however, until you buy this product & start aerating your lawn, you don't know what's underneath - - CATCH 22 !
All-in-all, This hollow tine aerator performed quite well in general, and excelled in the areas where the soil was good under the grass.
For the price, this is a bargain (being up to half price of other makes on the market).
Recommended (but keep a spare bamboo cane handy to clear the tines).

It will need a fairly strong man to use this product and even then only if soil is very moist. My husband used it just for about 10 minutes a day after rainfall and so therefore took several days for him to get around the lawn. Good product though, just make sure you have large enough muscles.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work at all on my lawn, 20 July 2009
This review is from: Hollow Tine Aerator
I have a compacted lawn. That's why I bought the product. However, the hollow tines aren't sharp enough to punch through the matting and compacted soil, so I'm going to have to dig it all up and relay.

If your lawn is of good quality and not too compact, then I believe this product could work well for you. Don't leave it until it becomes a concrete-like layer like mine.
