WHile its not always easy to tell from the photos this speaker unit isn't much bigger than a VHS cassette (remember them?) since we moved in a few years ago my wife and I have bemoaned the lack of a decent music system in our living room, we have an old separates system in the attic but its just too big and a variety of laptops etc that are OK but not fantastic. We have been using my old HDX9430EA laptop for the job as it has the best (and loudest) laptop I have ever heard. Thanks to a works bonus I was wandering around a certain high street computer store browsing when I saw this, after a cursory once over I saw it was set up to test so after a brief wrestle I had it connected to my mobile (there were about 25 discoverable bluetooth devices in there!) and tried some tunes through it, everything from Motorhead, metallica, tom petty and Jeff Waynes war of the worlds were blasted out accross the store, we even generated a small crowd. The sound in such a huge space was excellent and could be heard a few aisles away. So I bought it, got it home and paired it up with my Kindle Fire HD, brilliant sound but now it was in a living room the bass picked up another couple of notches, now it lives very unobtrusively in the TV cabinet, but the sound quality is amazing, you would have needed 6ft wooden speakers to generate this kind of bass a few years ago. THis small and compact device fiills the room and I haven't dared to see what its like on full, the bass has a real good kick to it but not enought ot overpower the rest of the sound, it has handled rock, metal, jazz and the aforementioned 'War of the Worlds' with ease and I have to say Richard Burtons voice has never sounded richer (its on par with the 500w pioneer system that lives in the attic).Read more ›

This little system is a pure gem. Have used constantly since I purchased it. It has even worked as an external speaker for my tv via a j2j cable (QED highly recommended ). In the 5 wks I've had it, it has been overseas, and 2 camping trips and has been totally amazing. For such a small system the range of sound is amazing from deep bass through to the background sounds so often never picked up on lesser systems. Already a part of my everyday life. LOVE IT.

The Bose Soundlink II is an impressive unit ... at a price.

Appearance wise, it looks as stylishly chic as Bose speakers always do. The wrap around cover converts to a stand that is stable. In terms of portability, it's not small, but the big issue is the weight. It weighs in at a little over 1.3kg - on the one hand this makes it robust and stable, but quite how portable that makes it is debatable. It's well built though.

Ease of set up is simple. It pairs with blue tooth devices simply. It can store up to six devices but can, obviously, only connect with one at a time. Sometimes it does get confused and I've had to re-pair active devices a couple of times. It's so simple that this isn't an issue but it's not faultless.

Feature-wise, in some regards it can be lacking, but equally, it doesn't need many features. For example, you don't get a remote control, but Bose argue that your device (mp3, tablet, laptop etc) all have controls on them so you can just use those. It does have a volume button on the unit though which you can use manually. The main feature I would have liked that it doesn't have is a speakerphone ability. If you are playing on a smart phone, the sound does cut when the phone rings, but the speaker isn't enabled for the call. The other annoying omission is a lead to connect non-bluetooth units to the input jack on the back. They are relatively cheap to obtain but when you are paying a premium price, albeit lower than many Bose units, it still feels like a mean shortcut. Also, slightly irritatingly, it will power down if you leave it off and you have to manually turn it on with the switch. This means, for example that you cannot use it as a speaker to an alarm on your unit.

The key issue though for most is sound and performance.

So, what we need are speakers, that:
- can wirelessly stream music from a range of devices;
- are portable;
- are rechargeable;
- produce fantastic sound quality.

Is this achievable? Yes it is. Is it achievable at an affordable price though?!

The output of these speakers is stunning - very clean, with a punchy bass that is belied by the package the size of a clock-radio, and capable of filling a house, let alone a room, with music. They pick up a blue-tooth signal at a range of - well, we managed to stream across the house, but they claim 10 metres. The unit doesn't look as beautiful as (say) an Apple product - but it's well-thought-out - neat things like the flappy thing making a stand, or when folded up switching off the power.

This represents the next-generation solution to the problem that boomboxes/mini-speakers/iPod docks try to solve - taking music with you - and it's probably the most versatile and least hassle solution. I guess the target customers are the people who would be looking for high-end versions of these things in previous eras; whether they would be prepared to pay this much remains to be seen. But those who do are likely to draw covetous looks.
