Bosch build a great-looking kettle, gracing any kitchen counter-top. We were really pleased with the design and the function of this kettle - easy to pour, boiled quickly, no problems with the metallic taste issue.

But after 18 months, it suddenly started to leak gently at all the seams - a crust of limescale appeared at each seam around the base and either side of the handle. Now it's puddling water from the base, and we're looking for another model.

Wouldn't you expect a kettle to last longer than this?

Whilst this kettle is stylish, boils quickly, and is easy to use, there seems to be something of a design fault...it leaks after a short time.
Looking at other reviews on this website and others, this seems to be a common fault.
if you want a kettle that will last you a good few years (and why shouldn't it?), I would suggest you buy something else.
However, if you don't mind spending around £40 for a kettle that you will have to throw away in about 18 months, then you might as well go for this one.
Please note that Bosch do not appear to be willing to recognise this fault and are not willing to replace faulty kettles.

I bought this kettle based on the reputable brand name plus it also looks pretty good for the price. I am so disappointed. It does everything you want a kettle to do except boil nice tasting water. Great design, yes. Great capacity, yes. Easy to use, yes. Well built, yes. BUT... the water, when boiled, tastes, as described by many others here, of metal/plastic/chemicals. And even after boiling with vinegar in the water a few times as suggested in the manual, plus thorough cleaning, it still tastes bad. I've just returned mine for a refund. Shame. Not up to the usual standards you can expect from Bosch. I just want a nice cup of tea. Is that too much to ask?

I can only reiterate the other reviewers that have observed this kettle failing at the base and then leaking and with GOOD REASON. I have had two now, as I thought the first must have just been from a bad batch. Both have had exactly the same fault and lasted less than a year. Bosch should read these reviews and withdraw this product from the market - it is simply substandard.

Buy something else.

Great design & good price, but leaves a strange aftertaste in the water. Have returned for a refund.

The design was appealing. However, I've now had the kettle 3 weeks and there is no way of getting rid of the metallic tasting water after boiling. I'm now boiling water in a saucepan until I decide what kettle I will buy and ensure that I receive a full refund. Dont buy this product or you will likely have the same problem as me.

Edited 3 Jan 2010 - unfortunately, the kettle now looks awful! Over the last six months limescale has gradually built up around the nozzle and other areas (and it is regularly cleaned!) and leaks. Now having to buy a new one and definitely avoiding Bosch.

Original review...

Overall, a good kettle. No problem with metallic water that earlier reviewers had, so it looks like that's been solved.

Points for:

- It's a good looking kettle (subjective).
- Despite looking like it might not fill from the spout (and despite not filling from the spout the first time I tried), it does fill from the spout fine.
- Boils fast (although I'm comparing it to a 6 year old Kenwood here).
- Price.

Points against:
- There's no float in the level guage, making it hard to read.
- The lid only opens 25% when you press the button, meaning that you have to open it manually to fill etc.
- You have to shut the lid manually, although to be fair we couldn't find a single steel kettle that had a lid that could be opened *and* shut using the button.
- Some steam escapes from around the lid and some of that condenses on the top of the lid. Still, we think it's acceptable (and we'd previously returned a Bellini kettle for just this reason).

Awful Kettle and Service. Bought this kettle in May within the month it started to leak from the measuring window. Contacted Bosch customer services, well what can I say, unhelpful, rude, couldn't be bothered. I bought Bosch because of the supposed quality of their products and customer service. Well I didn't see any of it and I will be replacing the kettle but not for another Bosch.
