First of all, the good bits about the drill. It is powerful, fairly light and works a treat under light use so I can see why other customers give this a good review. Also the keyless chuck tightening/locking mechanism is good when it works (no need for a chuck key) and is a strong selling point.

Now the bad points. After a day of reasonably heavy duty use where I was drilling large holes in concrete blocks using hammer action selection, I discovered that on occasions the drill bit slips in the chuck. On this one occasion, drill bit slipped, the chuck tightened and duly jammed in a fixed position so that the chuck was no longer able to take any other drill bits. Most frustrating! Later, I learned that this is a general problem with keyless chucks in general, not just this drill. As a consequence I decided to return the drill for a refund as it was within the 30 day period from the purchase date. I do not want to spend my time trying to release/unjam the chuck mechanism every time the drill bit slips which is quite a common occurrence! This problem could have been solved if keyless chucks included the teeth for a key when this is needed. If this had been done then I would not have had to return this Bosch electric drill for a refund.

So if you do decide to go for a electric drill, such as this one, with keyless chuck then beware of the pitfalls. It is not for me and I will go back to an "older" conventional electric drill with the chuck key provided.

The fact that this tool is still a best selling hammer drill on Amazon speaks for itself. However it has to be noted that green Bosch tools are not meant for professional use. Build quality is no match to the blue (and more expensive) versions.

The Bosch PSB 650 RE, as the name suggests, has a 650 Watt motor which is not meant for large jobs requiring loads of power, yet this has its advantages:
Lightweight, compact and low power consumption.

The drill comes in a handy carry case, so once the job is finished it can be stowed away with ease.

I really like the rotary speed dial found on the trigger, and the very comfortable grip.

I would recommend this drill for odd jobs around the house. As for value I give it top marks, even though I have read a review mentioning the keyless chuck, which on occasions tends to loosen on prolonged hammer action. I have not experienced any problems so far.

Having said that, the keyless chuck is a treat to use, especially for those jobs were the bit needs to be changed often.

Bottom line: If you need a reliable yet cheap drill which will satisfy most needs around the house, than the Bosh PSB 650RE should be on your shortlist.

    Highly recommended.

I agree with the previous review in that this is nice and light with good functionality but I also had a problem with a bit getting stuck. Definitely a good buy if you're just doing light weight jobs but as soon as you need to get into tougher or mixed surfaces, I would revert back to the old fashioned type! However, I did get one of these for my daughter and she's found it to be perfect for the requirements of her house renovation. So, all decorative stuff is fine but avoid for heavier work.

Before buying the 650RE, I got a fair amount of use out of a 600 RE I inherited. The 600 RE was a bit wobbly when I received it, I imagine this came from pure abuse. My turn to abuse it more gently over the next few years, doing a lot of sanding with an extension.
When the drilling really become to wobbly, I ordered the 650 RE, which has one rather annoying issue: when putting a drill bit (up to 8mm) in the chuck, and tightening it, maybe 1 out of 2 times, it is completely off center! It is way to easy to do this, it is not that easy to do it right. Never had this issue with any other drill.

It's a good drill. The instructions on how to lock the chuck were not particularly clear so it destroyed a drill bit when I first used it and only after several uses did I discover the knack of locking the chuck properly.
