2.0 out of 5 stars Its not built to last!!!!! 11 Dec 2011
    By rm
I bought this drill a few months ago as a replacement to a 20 year old Bosch hammer drill that was getting a little tired.
I had always trusted the build quality of Bosch tools, until this one. Unfortunately, its just not built for hard labour, I used all day for 2 weeks to refurbish a couple of rooms, which included drilling into Brick, concrete, wood and steel of various depths. The power was okay, it tackled everything i wanted it to.

BUT the problem is the build quality, after about a week the chuck started to grind when trying to tighten and loosen. At times locking, needing a mole wrench to open it!
The switch from hammer to drill mode, got stiffer and stiffer. The gearbox you could here was grinding, it did not sound good. I replaced it and the second one after a week of the same sort of usage is suffering the same, as a result i had to use my old 20 year drill to finish the job. Its unlikely that I was unlucky enough to get 2 of the same drill not lasting the job.

My feeling is this drill is designed purley for VERY LIGHT work like hanging up pictures (not to many). It promises much, but unfortunaltely if you going to use it for a lot of work or expect it to last a few years, I would stay away from this one and look for something else!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little drill. 27 Jun 2012
    Verified Purchase
I cut my DIY teeth on an older version of this drill and after many years of faithful family service it retired.

This updated version is better, lightweight, easy to use for a left hander and has no chuck key to loose.
I chose the electric over the battery because I use it infrequently and it was much less money.

Recently I have put it through its paces drilling hanging basket brackets in various stone and brick. It performed perfectly and is great for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bosch drill PSB 500 RE 1 Aug 2011

I bought this as a replacement for my old Bosch drill which lasted around 25 years. This one performed so badly that I sent it back. It was simply not man enough for the job. Disappointing because Bosch are usually extremely good products.

This is a brilliant drill!!! Really straight forward without that the manual reads like rocket science. In fact you can easily get by without reading the manual at all. The drive is reverseable and there is a simple switch for drilling or hammering. Torque you may vary with flexible pressure on the main trigger similar to putting a foot on the accelerator of a car, which is pretty nifty. The universal chuck fits to what-ever drill is required. Handle bar is adjustable for 360 degrees, therefore will please all kinds of handedness (left, right or ambi-dextrous). The little green case (13 x 11 inches) is great for safe-keeping, so none of the cheap stuff that would disappoint you. It gives quite a warm humming sound when air drilling, not too loud and does not weigh too heavy in one hand, but feels perfect in both. In my opinion this drill makes a great tool for a beginner or regular DIY enthusiast. It's a bargain if you can get yours for just under 40 quid!!!

P.S. It also can be an electronic screwdriver. This would require a universal adapter bit to which you attach the smaller bits. No bits are included with this drill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Drill 25 Aug 2011
This was bought for me as a present as I'm currently renovating my house, this drill has been so handy able go through anything I've asked it to (with the help of some nice Makita drill bits) the hammer action makes light work of walls and the motor doesn't ever smell like its suffering. Small complaint would be that being six foot if I'm up a ladder drilling the cord lead is a bit short for me and sometimes mean that I have to balance the extension lead somewhere. But this really is the only quibble

4.0 out of 5 stars Hammer Time 26 Jan 2013
    Verified Purchase
Just moved into my first house, and the previous owners decided it'd be totally super awesome to remove everything that was nailed down. Curtain rods, bathroom cupboards, shelves, you name it, Gone.

Quickly (2 hours of drilling) discovered my battery bosch, whilst ace at screwing things, was awful against mortar. In steps the Bosch PSB 500, and what a revelation, quick work was made of half a dozen holes in brick that would have taken 2 days with my previous drill.

I wouldn't expect to use this for lots of work, its a budget hammer drill afterall, but what it does for quick small jobs is fantastic. The adjustable foregrip made it super easy drilling in tight corners, and it really motors along at full tilt.

The downsides are that its quite hard to keep at a slow pace for drilling, but the hammer function worked like wild stallions at even half pace so that wasn't really a problem in the end. It also, because of the speed, threw dust everywhere, but thats my own fault for being overzealous.

Overall; Brilliant for quick drilling jobs around the place, plenty of grunt and no batteries required.

the PSB 500 is very much a lightweight drill but it will only cope with small drill sizes I bought because I was fed with charging my drill every time I needed it.the drill runs very smooth typical bosch but again only for small drills bits

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for concrete 19 July 2011
    Verified Purchase
For the cogniscenti, it might seem obvious that this item -- though a hammer drill -- is not suitable for drilling into concrete. I am a relative novice so I did not know. Even with masonry bits and in hammer mode this could barely make a dent in a concrete lintel above a window (even 10-15cm above). I borrowed a friend's SDS hammer drill and it was soooo easy. Yes, it will handle ordinary brick and plaster, but if you anticipate a tougher job, look elsewhere.

This annoyance aside, the drill is light and easy to use (I like that the speed varies with how much you depress the trigger). Another little point, be careful not to push the supporting front handle forward without securing it properly -- the cuff can be pushed onto the spinning chuck and damage it. User error, admittedly, but a design flaw too. The wire isn't very long, so you will probably need an extension cord. Not a deal breaker.

Ok for light household jobs and the fact that it is wired means that you will have no issues about failing rechargeables.
