Bosch routers are versatile and highly creative power tools. Routers work on the principle of ‘machining’ or ‘milling’ the material, i.e. they cut off and remove small chips, giving the workpiece a new shape. Once you’ve got to know how useful they are, you won’t know how you did without them. Routers allow users to be creative, putting their ideas perfectly into practice. They are one of the most versatile power tools for working on wood. They enable you to work with an extremely high level of convenience and precision. Professional results can be achieved in comparatively little time and with great precision.

Routers are suitable for:

  • Edges and profiles: Build your own furniture and use the router to quickly profile the edges and to create your own personal style.
  • Grooves: With parallel guide or guide rail you can easily rout grooves and rebates. This is an easy and effortless way to obtain sturdy wood joints.
  • Template routing: For surface decoration or the coping of individual shapes.
  • Free-handed routing: Decorations, patterns, shapes and writing characters are all possible when working with a router. For this purpose the machine is guided freely over a design pattern traced with carbon paper onto the workpiece

There are many applications for a router, such as edge forming, grooving in wood, shaping, straight routing or groove cutting, core box routing, chamfering, mortising, laminate trimming, v-grooving and lettering, decorative grooving, frame routing, edge forming, drilling, rebating, profiling, rounding over, long-hole routing and copy routing.

The heart of the POF 1200 ACE is its motor, which makes the cutter (bit) rotate at speeds of up to 28,000 revolutions per minute. The motor position is on top of the milling cage--a kind of frame that allows the router bit to plunge into the material precisely from above with a maximum plunge depth or stroke of 55 mm.

Depth Step

The depth stop allows precise depth settings even in the plunged position. The easily adjustable depth stop rod with zero point setting is equipped with a scale in millimetres and inches. The depth stop can be adjusted in three stages. In this way you can pre-program successive cutting depths in one go. A spring loaded lever ensures that the plunge mechanism can be safely and easily loosened and tightened.

Spindle Lock

The spindle lock allows you to block the motor drive shaft. This helps you change the router bit with only one tool (without countering) easily and fast.

Bayonet Fitting for Template Guides--Bosch SDS

Template guides allow you to work with pre-fabricated templates. Bosch routers feature the unique SDS bayonet fitting for template guides. The SDS system allows quick template guide changes without additional tools.

Easy Electronics

Electronic pre-selection of speed: control-electronic with speed selection ensures the optimal cutting speed especially when working with difficult materials (such as aluminium, mineral-bonded plastic or hard wood).

Don’t Let the Dust Fly

An extraction adapter is a must for clean work. Two knurled screws are used to attach the adapter to the base plate, which is then linked up to a vacuum cleaner by a hose. You can use this for connection to a Bosch all-purpose vacuum cleaner or an ordinary household vacuum cleaner. Dust is directly extracted at the router bit via the extraction and fed to the vacuum cleaner. This gives a clear view of the workpiece and an environment free of dust.

Other Features

The POF 1200 ACE has a great range of additional features that help make it a pleasure to use. A transparent chip guard protects you from chips flying around and leaves a clear view of the workpiece. The sturdy aluminium footplate comes with an optimised removable plastic gliding shoe that ensures frictionless working. The outstanding ergonomic design with softgrip helps users to balance the centre of gravity, which ensure safe guidance of the machine and higher convenience. The on/off switch is built into the handle grip. This ensures comfortable and safe handling and prevents accidentally moving the machine off track while you work

Tips for Using Routers

When you work with a router, you should always be aware of the routing direction and its relation to the rotary direction of the router bit (which is always clockwise when you view the router from the top). The rotating bit, as it cuts into the material, develops forces that make it veer off-line. If you keep this relationship in mind and understand the principle of this characteristic, it can be used to your advantage and enable good control of the machine.

Without a guide fence the router will run off to the right if it is pulled towards the user as shown. In this case the parallel fence should be on the left of the router .

Without a guide fence the router will run off to the right if it is pushed forward or away from the user. In this case the parallel fence should be on the right of the router .

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little tool... 18 Dec 2012
    By Tony
    Verified Purchase
I bought this router as I had all my tools stolen, including both my routers. This was bought s a happy medium, as I cannot afford to replace everything at once. Therefore it had to be powerful enough to keep on going on large jobs and gentle enough for some of the delicate intricate work I do occasionally. It surpassed expectations, it is easy to control when free handing and powerful enough to cut deep detail into hard woods, soft woods and mdf. Only a couple of minor critisisms, the first of which is probably unfair, is my kitchen fitter cutters are too big for it, which meant more expense. In hindsight, I should have bought its big sister, as it comes with more toys, but this one was a great deal. It will be an important part of my tool kit for many years to come. The second critisism is the plastic guard is a little flimsy and I fear in time it is going to break off. It hasn't yet though, so only time will tell.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A most essential item. 25 April 2010

I looked forward to receiving the Router and used it within the first week . It was purchased to replace an 800 watt model of a different brand a had for about 12 years and had stopped working.I was surprised when it included 3 collets enabling me to utilise a range of shank diameters .I look forward to many years of service as the router is more robust than I expected .

    1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing. 2 Mar 2013
    By keithh
I looked at this tool as a possible replacement for an old "Power Devil" router, which recently gave up after many years' service. Having happily used other Bosch DIY and gardening tools, I had high hopes for it. However, the fact that the switch can't be locked on is a major deficiency as it means the tool can't be mounted in a router bench. Compared with other makes it is quite heavy for prolonged hand-held use and from experience with other routers, they can often be tricky to control and keep switched on at the same time. The weight also counts against it for fine control in a dovetail jig, for example.

Lack of a decent fine height adjustment is also a big negative. It may be possible to use with the Trend adjustment accessory supplied for their T4 & T5 models (this worked fine on my Power Devil) but having tested the weight and confirmed the switch problem, I couldn't be bothered to investigate this further.

Not wanting another cheapo router (there are several Power Devil clones available) I considered the Bosch GKF 600 and Trend T4. The T4 is an 850 watt machine like my Power Devil and I already have several accessories which will immediately attach to it so that's the one I've bought.

For anyone worrying about using a router with a locking on/off switch, I run mine, in conjunction with a dust extractor, via a 4-way extension lead with a foot-operated switch (thanks, LIDL!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, made but lacks feature 14 Jan 2011
This a well-engineered router at a reasonable price, however, the lack of a fine height adjustment is a serious omission and I wouldn't buy this model again for that reason.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value 28 Aug 2012
    By DaveB

Bought for DIY use, & worth every penny. It replaces my dad's old Black & Decker, chosen because Bosch have always been good quality & value for me.
Excellent price & delivery from Amazon

    Good points:
Feels lighter than it is, very easy on the arms for a novice like me
Good selection of accessories, inc 3 collets
Enough power for my requirements (grooves/ dadoes, edges, rounding over) but runs quietly
Easy plunge, easy to lock in place
Very easy bit & guide bush changing

Power switch won't lock on, so I can't use it on a router table
No micro-adjustment (not a major issue so far)
I know it was cheap but a case would have been useful
I hate to see Bosch tools with Made In China written on them!

    5.0 out of 5 stars Bosch POF 1200 router 19 Oct 2010
    Verified Purchase
Having read so much about routers in general it appeared to me that many burn out under excessive load etc, so that was off putting to me! However, having order and now had time to use this unit my fear of a burn out have gone.
This is a great machine and easy to use. And it has not burned out despite my lack of knowledge about routing.
I continue to have great fun with my . . . 'sometimes rubbish' art work in wood but never has it failed me.
Dust extraction and depth settings work very well and the changing of the "bits" are very easy to do.
Vibration is sometimes felt when I move it in the wrong direction but even this is not that severe.
Sorry I dont know much about the technicals with these machines, but if I can work it and get great results after a little practice, it should hopefully work for you with great results too.
