Bosch PLR 15 Laser Rangefinder

The Bosch PLR 15 Laser Rangefinder technology provides high levels of precision every time for quickly measuring lengths and distances. Whether you’re measuring just to hang pictures the same distance apart or to see if a new piece of furniture will fit in your living room, just switch it on and off you go.

Product in use
Easy to operate

The design of the Bosch PLR 15 keeps it simple to avoid a need for specialist knowledge, and instead can be used to take a measurement at the use of just one switch. The Bosch PLR 15 gives a continuous measurement which can be stopped with one press of the red button and then restarted again with another press. This simple design makes it even ideal for individuals who are new to laser measuring technology.

Accurate laser measurements

The Bosch PLR 15 offers accuracy of +/- 3 millimetres up to ranges of 15 metres regardless of the distance being measured, as the laser is beamed in a direct line towards the intended target. In comparison, rangefinders using ultrasonic technology can only offer accuracy of +/- 50 millimetres over a distance of 10 metres as the waves emitted spread wide and can hit multiple objects which all deflect and therefore can provide false results.

PLR 15 product featuresr
Product in use

With dimensions of just 100 x 36 x 23 millimetres, the Bosch PLR 15 Laser Rangefinder is a small laser rangefinder, fitting comfortably in your hand and easily into your pocket. The Bosch PLR 15 is also quicker to use than a tape measure as well as more accurate and capable of greater distances. The sliding switch feature makes it a quick and simple to use tool so even those with less experience in DIY can use the PLR 15 with ease. The soft grip provides protection to make it a more robust design which gives the PLR 15 a longer lifespan, and also makes it comfortable for the user to handle.

LED display screen

The LED screen has a backlight to illuminate the display screen and make the results easy to read, as well as give the tool a modern attractive appearance. After using the hold measurement function and having restarted the continuous measurement function, the LED screen displays the previous measurement that you measured and stopped on as well as the current measurement now being taken.

Digital Measuring Tools from Bosch

Digital measuring tools from Bosch impress with precision and extremely easy operation--whether when levelling objects, measuring distances or detecting all different kinds of materials and power cables.

Bought this digital measurer a while ago. It is brilliant. Compact, easy to use and very accurate. I have found it particularly useful for measuring longer distances which can be a real problem with an ordinary tape measure.

I'd been toying with the idea of getting one of these for a while but wasn't sure I could justify spending the money so when it came up on a deal I took the plunge. I'm already seriously impressed with this well thought out little tool. Taking accurate measurements takes seconds, place on the surface and point in the direction you need to measure, push the button and it holds the last reading. The display is clear to read and backlit which is a very helpful touch. Using a tape measure for anything over a couple of metres becomes problematic and I'd been putting off measuring our garage for some planned conversion works but I was able to do this in seconds no problem with this. It might seem pricey but for the time and convenience saved over (hopefully) a lifetime but I think it's well worth it at present!

Aug 2015 - A quick update after more than 6 months regular use, still on the original set of batteries and performing well, it's been used countless times, possibly one of the best things I've ever bought!

The Bosch PLR15 Digital Laser Ranger finder is a small and very easy to use range finder.

The PLR15 is for most jobs and weather conditions a direct replacement for a tape measure for most circumstances. It does need a target to point at - you can put some card if you are measure to a drop off edge. To set the PLR15 up you need to put the included batteries in; point the Bosch End away from your eyes and point at something between 15cm and 15m away. In about 1/2 a second you will know how far away the dot is. The distance (measure from the back of the device) is output on a green and black display that is easy to read in most all light conditions. Besides the switch there is one button; hold - press it and the display keeps the last measured value till you press it again. It is resoundingly metric; so if you are needing imperial distances you may want to stick with your tape measure.

On some surfaces it can take some time to settle the measurement down - I also found it occasionally floating between a few mm of the distance. As it measures the reflection of the laser beam this can happen as there are some super unreflective surfaces (like glass) that it can't measure accurately. The PLR15 does has some inaccuracies in its measurements - the manual lists it as +/- 3mm at 25C; it gets worse as the temperature deviates from that. Your existing tape measure is likely as bad (they aren't calibrated and the more you use them the worse they become so don't take it as a big negative; just don't expect it to be perfect. If you want to use the PLR 15 as a ruler; finding exactly 1.5m from your target you can slide it along the surface and the display more or less keeps up in real time (just remember it measures to the end away from the laster.

I bought myself this as a birthday present after months of 'should I ? Shouldnt I ?' Having seen them in use a few times they where pretty good, especially in my career as a professional and time served joiner, however I will give my review like this, first the good :

1. The tool is very small, maybe the length of a mobile phone.

2. The screen is back lit and is nice and glossy, (would not stay glossy for long in any work place)

3. The ability to store the previous measurement is good but seem like an obvious essential feature.

4. When it works it is accurate, no getting away from that fact.

Unfortunately this is where the good points end and I must be honest and state the bad so here they are :

1. Extremely unreliable and temperamental, im on to my second product within one week, I bought mine from my local B&Q and had it replaced only 4 and a half ours ago, after testing this laser on very basic short distances, door frames, window reveals, floor space etc the tool has failed again showing the identical ' screen flashing all icons' error.

I read in the troubleshooting guide in the manual and this particular error is indeed the official defective tool error signal and stated that the tool should be sent back to the manufacturer.

2. The build quality is poor for Bosch, if it wasn't for the screen being so nice, it would almost pass as a silver line product re-badged as a Bosch, this thing will smash to pieces if it is dropped from any height in the real world where it is supposed to be used .

4. This sort of comes under build quality, but it is too light, for me weight = reliability, even if this tool worked it should only ever be used in domestic and light applications.

5.

Fast, works great indoors or outdoors. No case is included, which is poor show from Bosch as the device has an exposed lens that needs protection. Well worth the money if you don't need a rangefinder for > 15m.

This is my first ever Laser Measure device.
I found this to be surprisingly accurate upon use.
Believe me the first 2 weeks or so you will be measuring everything and by everything I mean everything.....
I mapped my whole house so i could set-up an accurate floor plan on a mapping software.
This helps me to plan my extension for the house.
More over I am also aware of the exact dimensions to calculate the building material costs for quotations from builders (to avoid any ripoffs).....
overall very satisfied with this purchase and would recommend to all you DIY'ers (and also people who have cats).
