Excellent little tool but...
on 22 May 2009
... be aware that it is cheaper than the Isio 'shape & edge' because it only comes with one tool - the edging tool. I bought the 'shape & edge' - it comes with both tools. Here's my review with the 'shape' tool omitted:
The edging blade attachment is not just for edging the lawn - I used to hate trimming round the trees on our lawn. I used to hold the grass in one hand, shears between my knees & cut one-handed - a pain in the neck. Now I just walk around the tree - it takes three seconds.
The edging blade is an accident waiting to happen - it is far sharper than I had expected. I reckon it'd take your fingertip off without any difficulty. That's not a problem.
There are (apparently) two versions of the Isio - one with silver blades, and one with black & silver blades. The former appears to be an older model and is cheaper (well, on Amazon it is currently more expensive, but it is cheaper elsewhere).
There is a long handle accessory, for using the edging blade without having to kneel. It works with the old and new models. I nearly bought it but am pleased I didn't - I'm young and have no problem using the Isio while kneeling. If your garden is large or if you are elderly you might want to buy the handle. If in doubt, I suggest you don't buy it and see how you go.
Battery: the instructions state that it takes 5 hours to charge, and will run for 40 minutes.
One thing I like - I'd finished, packed up & then noticed a bit I'd missed. You don't need to get the extension lead out again - just grab the Isio & trim. I found myself looking for things to trim.
OK, kids, time for a haircut!
Edit, 16/6/12: I bought this with both tools - the Shape & the Edge tools - because I needed the Shape tool (essentially a small hedge cutter) to trim fresh growth off spherical Box plants. As for the Edge tool, I find it useful too BUT when I've used it to try to edge my lawn, I find it's not very good because lawn edges can be physically tough to cut, e.g. clumps of grass exiting a root system right on the edge of your lawn (they take effort to cut).
So, whether or not you'll find the Isio Edge tool useful depends what you want it for. If like me you want it to do jobs that require little physical effort and are awkward to do, like trimming wispy bits of grass around trees on your lawn, it's great. But if you want it for anything that requires a decent amount of effort, I reckon you won't be happy. Maybe this just reflects the fact that our lawn contains some coarse grass - if you have a fine lawn which is physically easy to trim, you should be happy.
This machine isn't designed to create a lot of power or leverage. It's designed for physically easy cutting that happens to be awkward, and for trimming one-handed.
