Product Description

The PCM 8 S has a number of useful features.
The PCM 8 S has a number of useful features. Click here for a larger image.

The Bosch PCM 8 S compound mitre saw has a powerful 1200 watt motor for the toughest applications. The saw is able to cut cross, bevel, mitre and double mitre cuts--it’s useful for a variety of tasks around the home, and its compact size and light weight make it a convenient tool to both use and handle. Anybody who has to cut a lot of long material quickly and precisely is prepared for anything with these saws. Use for straight cuts and for cuts with mitre or incline angles.

The compound mitre saw is ideal for strips, slats, boards, square timbers with a small cross-section or narrow wall panels. The compound sliding mitre saw is recommended for material with a larger cross-section, such as wide square timbers, thick beams or wide parquet panels--its sturdy double slide mechanism increases the working range of the saw blade

Precision

The PCM 8 S also makes precision cuts simple with an easy-to-read horizontal imprint scale at the front and rear for mitre and bevel cuts and an integrated laser beam to make sure the cuts are just right. The tool is perfect for accurate sawing of thick work pieces. The PCM 8 S comes with no-load speed of max. 5,200 rpm. It is especially beneficial for repetitive cuts, where the highest level of accuracy is a prerequisite, as with crosscuts and long beams, picture frames, multiple boards with identical length, panels and furniture making (esp. shelves).

Support and Exactness

The PCM 8 S is fitted with an 8-inch TCT blade. The saw is constructed of high quality aluminium for high strength, precision, and light weight. Cutting angles (Mitres) are 47 degrees left and 53 degrees right: compound Mitre is 45 degrees to the left. A trenching cut is possible allowing you to cut part way through your timber (great for groves or tenons). The user will be able to cut timber up to a maximum of 70 mm thick and 282 mm in width. Other features and equipment include timber supports, a dust bag, timber clamp and a laser to show the cutting line. The integrated spindle lock makes it even easier for an easy blade replacement.

Extension

Even cutting wider work pieces to size is possible thanks to the ease of use and slide function, which supports two stable side continuations with additional parallel fence and a double sliding rail.

Other Features

The mitre saw comes complete with a dust bag which fits easily onto the dust extraction port to ensure as much dust is trapped as possible. In addition, the saw includes the Bosch Softgrip handle, which allows users to get to real grips for outstanding, safe guidance and effortless working

Safety

While working with benchtop tools, read the instructions carefully and be aware of the security advice--always wear the appropriate protection:

  • Ear protection
  • Dust mask
  • Safety glasses

I bought this because I have quite a bit of joinery to do around the house we are renovating. My first reaction, when the postie staggered in with it, was wow, what a big box. But then this is quite a big bit of kit, and really solid.

I opted for the sliding saw, and I'm glad I did. I find it handles a much bigger range of sizes and formats that way. The mitre has already been used (to make the table on which this saw is to be mounted) and it works fine.

So far I have not found the laser, which tells you where the cut will be made, very accurate. I expected to have to fiddle, but it seems to be a bit more than that - the line seems to vary depending on the height of the wood I'm cutting. Anyway, I musn't prejudge because I haven't tried to adjust it yet.

My impression is that this is a very nicely made piece of kit, solid and precise. I like it.

    >> Updated 25 March 2011 << Just to say that I have worked this tool hard, and it is going strong. Don't know what I would do without it now. Anything repetitive, typically cutting lengths, cutting to angles etc, the time saved is just amazing. Love it.

Well made, accurate and has a hefty solid feel to it. I bought this as a replacement from a previous cheaper compound mitre saw that had finally burned out after a particularly heavy session. When faced with a dead saw I had to choose to go cheap and cheerful again or head upwards with the attendant cost implications.

My mind was made up to avoid the low end option given a new house purchase and the need to do a lot of second fix joinery - architrave and skirting boards etc. However the obvious choices from the pro end of the market - De Walt for example, are eye wateringly expensive unless you are making a living out of using this kind of tool. I then looked at the mid range stuff from Hitachi, Jet, Bosch and a few other well known brands.

Finally I plumped for the Bosch PCM 8 based on features and reasonable cost. When doing so I figured that firstly being Bosch it would be fairly well made and generally able to do the tasks that I required.

I have been more than impressed with this machine. Firstly, it compares well to much more expensive saws with regard to build quality. I have a friend who has a high end De-Walt and it does not appear to be any better put together than the Bosch. Secondly, it is accurate, once the laser alignment beam has been calibrated. Thirdly and most importantly it has a very clean cut. To achieve this a machine has to have a solid heavy manufacture, decent bearings and high quality motor. This Bosch would appear to have all the above, given the excellent vibration free operation and quality of work produced.

Being a compound saw it must cut in all planes and it does this well.

I ordered very late Saturday night, I received some emails over Sunday / Monday morning to advise of delivery between 10.30am and 11.30am on Monday - delivered 10.45am Monday morning. Excellent!

The saw is extremely solid, there is nothing flimsy about it, even the plastic blade guards feel well engineered. Good selection of extras included in the package - extending supports, a brilliant clamp (it's fast to use which is key, otherwise i doubt i'd use a clamp). The saw slide mechanism is first rate - no free play in the movement, just solid sliding fore and aft.

Out of the box my saw needed some very minor adjustments (less than 1mm so i could just have left it). 15 minutes with a set square, a 12mm socket and i was all set. There are comprehensive step by step instructions in the booklet.

The laser is excellent and the light is perfectly adequate. The quality of cut is first class.

Excellent product and excellent delivery from Amazon. I'm very happy with this purchase.

This saw is brilliant. Ignore the reviews complaining about damage (that happens get over it, they'll replace it for you!).

It took me a few hours to get the fence perfectly square with the blade but after that perfect cuts every time. The laser is not great; I have still not managed to get it spot on and when cutting wet timber it quickly becomes difficult to see the laser as the lens gets very sticky. I have found it just as easy (and more accurate) to line the blade with my mark before starting the saw.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a good, accurate saw without spending the earth.

Don't know how I ever managed without it!

Needed very slight adjustment to get excellent square cuts. Delighted with the accuracy. The plastic body of the saw feels a little light, however for me who will be using it for hobby work, it won't get the type of hardship expected on a worksite. I don't foresee any problem with build quality. The dust bag seems to be more ornamental than functional, however my dust collector gathers most of the dust. In terms of value for money, it's an excellent purchase. Delivery took about 6 days (to Ireland) - excellent.
