5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 23 April 2009

This review is from: Borstal Boy [2002] [DVD] (DVD)
Again another Danny Dyer film that is fantastic. After watching The Business, The Football Factory, Severance and Goodbye Charlie Bright, I was expecting this to be more of the same, Dyer playing an East End gangster, and been brilliant at it. I was very suprised watching this film. Dyer portrays a gay sailor and the storyline revolves around romance and passion.
It is not his usual however if your a fan of Danny Dyer in his gangster films, give this a go. You may be pleasently suprised. I was!

3.0 out of 5 stars Left lacking, 12 Mar 2010
I loved the cover of the DVD box which is probably why I ended up buying it. It sat for a month or two on my shelf until my friend and I decided to have a movie night and 'Borstal Boy' was one of those selected.

I enjoyed the film, the acting was good, but something just didn't feel complete by the end of the movie - my friend had read the book on which it was based, and suggested that I read it.

Having borrowed the book from the library, I read it in one sitting. The book was an assured piece of prose, and gave me both insight and information into what was going on politically and socially at the time that Brendan got sent to the borstal system in Britain.

As I have said I loved the movie, but it covers so small a time capsule compared to the book, that it is not reflective of what happened to Brendan. Watch the movie for what it is, a good yarn, well acted, with lovely scenic shots but a touch slow in parts; read the book afterwards to get the full story

Dave

What can I say, I nearly cried towards the end! JESUS!! If you are into watching an untold/forbidden love type thing, with realism, war, good n bad etc then buy it!

I got this mainly because I am a fan of danny dyer, and gay, and in this he plays a gay guy thrown into borstal out of the navy for thieving, and he meets a lovely guy in there!!

WATCH IT!! QUALITY VIEWING!! Not vile in any way shape or form!
