A mixed bag of produce,
This review is from: The Borough Market Book: From Roots to Renaissance (Paperback)
In the late 1960s I commuted to work in Park Street (where Courage, Barclay and Simonds then had a bottling factory, offices and laboratories for their breweries) via the old Borough Market. During the morning rush hour, the pubs were open for the market workers and one could buy fruit and wegetables by the crate. The atmosphere of the place, with its hustle and bustle and trains thundering overheard, was tangible. Sadly this sense of the past has not really been captured in what is essentially a mix of recipe book, commentary on the present and (not unnaturally) an advertisment for the current traders. I bought this book on the promise of Ptolomy Dean's authorship, only to find that his contribution is only part of the creative input to the publication. His contributions to the TV programme 'Restoration' have always been insightful, both orally and pictorially, and one gathers that his office is situated in the market, but his contribution to this book is only as one of several co-authors. So in summary, I would recommend this book to those who want to learn more about the Borough Market as it is today but the book's historical element, the 'Roots' of the title, is minimal.
