Format:Audio CD
The 2nd String Quartet is probably Borodin's best known work (even if you think you've never heard it, you'll surely recognise the third movement Notturno). The 1st String Quartet is heard less often and I know of no other recordings of the unfinished String Sextet, the other item included here. All three pieces are splendidly played by the Lindsays, augmented in the Sextet by Louise Williams and Raphael Wallfisch. As usual with the Lindsays, the great strength of their playing lies in the way that each of the players listens to and complements the others. If you want grandstanding, then look elsewhere. But if you enjoy thoughtful and intimate music-making in a beautifully balanced recording, then I can highly recommend this CD.

This was my first full recording of Borodin's music, and what a delight it is. Bright melodies in excellently clear recordings, played by the Lindsays, one of the finest quartets.
If you want to investigate Romantic chamber music, this could be an excellent place to start. At the price it's a snap, so buy and enjoy.

A British Reading to Rival the Russians...

This gorgeous reading of mystery, wit and beauty rivals the Russian's namesake--the famous Borodins.
Borodin: String Quartet No. 1 in A Major; String Quartet No. 2 in D Major
The Lindsays here have a clear teleological view of Borodin's architecture; nevertheless, en route, their sectional phraseology is contingent and episodic, thusly engendering a maze-like mysteriousness of delightfully surprizing twists and turns.
The Lindsays play on classic instruments of the later 17th Century, and their technical articulation is superb--(beware the dangerous left-hand pizzicati!).
The miking, ambience, and recorded sound here are faultless.
Along with the Raphael and Chilingirian ensembles, the Lindsays continue the proud tradition of British excellence.

Typical Russian tunefulness

I ordered this specific recording of the Borodin quartets after reading the rave review of The Lindsays recording in Gramaphone Magazine. As with all of the Russian composers of his era Borodin was chock full of fetching motifs that spin into delightful melodies. My first interest was in the second quartet with its more well-known "tunes," but exploring the first and third quartets reveals hidden gems of musicality that open the door even wider into the joy of Borodin.
