Book Description

7 Feb 2012 Cahill Witch Chronicles (Book 1)

Romance, magic and an age-old prophecy - the first novel in a stunning new paranormal young adult series. Born Wicked is to witches what Twilight is to vampires!

Our mother was a witch too, but she hid it better.

I miss her.

To me, the magic feels like a curse. According to the Brothers, it's devil-sent. Women who can do magic-they're either mad or wicked. So I will do everything in my power to protect myself and my sisters. Even if it means giving up my life - and my true love.

Because if the Brothers discover our secret, we're destined for the asylum, or prison . . . or death.

Praise for BORN WICKED:

2.0 out of 5 stars maybe best read as part of the series 20 May 2013
Format:Paperback
Born Wicked, is the first in the Cahill Witch Chronicles series. It's Jessica Spotswoods second novel. (The first to sell according to her website). The book falls into the genre of YA supernatural.

Set in New England in the early 1900's, there are similarities with the New England of 1600-1700's and its witch hunts. The Novel revolves around the lives of three young girls left pretty much to fend for themselves after their mothers' death and their father withdraws into his own world. To add to this difficult situation the girls are hiding something. They are witches. On her death bed their mother entrusts Cate the eldest with the task of keeping the younger girls Maura and Tess safe and their powers secret.

Their lives are complicated by The Brotherhood a religious council who rule their town with an iron fist, hunting witches relentlessly.

Cate is the main voice of the book. She has a lot of responsibility for such a young girl. Keeping head strong Maura and quietly observant Tess under control. A difficult task even without their special powers.

Long held secrets emerge, putting Cate and her sisters in grave danger, from all sides. Help comes from unexpected quarters making Cate reassess all she knows about the world she has grown up in.

Cate is forced by those she thought would protect her to choose between her sisters and her own happiness. She makes the only choice she can but will it be enough to keep everyone safe?

I liked the book, it had an easy conversional style and I sympathised with the characters. I felt they were believable and likeable on the whole. Cate becomes a bit Martyr-ish as the book progresses but given the choices she has to make this is probably quite fitting.

I felt the book was always on the cusp of something and would perhaps be improved by being read as part of the chronicles rather than as a stand alone novel. This first novel in the series sets the tone, gives a good insight into the characters personalities and the world they live in. I felt a little disappointed however when at the end, nothing much had happened. There were minor incidents and situations narrowly avoided but nothing that made me feel excited about reading on.

The book was well written and I think over all worth reading but I hope the second novel includes a bit more action as this one seemed to just set the scene

3.0 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointing 20 Feb 2013
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
When I originally heard about this book I was more than intrigued as rather than making an Urban Fantasy in the modern age, the author decided to give it the flection of historical fiction and whilst for the most part the book worked well on some levels, there were quite a few others where it failed to live up to my expectations as parts were easily predicatable as well as treading a familiar road as a young woman is pulled between love and her family.

Its not that there's anything inherently wrong with the title but when most of the book is setting the scene without bringing all those wonderful historical references to add a timely charm, that it starts to leave you wondering where the series is going to go (this is part one of the Cahill Witch Chronicles) that will give the reader not only the fire but the desire to keep on going.

Throw into the mix a major problem of Cate being a pretty perfect woman (beautiful, intelligent and of course extremely powerful) and it leaves you wondering why you want to care about this central character when others such as Maura stir the pot wonderfully well taking on Cate at every opportunity. It is a book that does have a lot of scope and here's hoping that in future outings the characters will do a little more than follow a predictable path, but all in, for me, I'll look at the next part to see what mayhem will ensue.

2.0 out of 5 stars Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood 16 Feb 2013
By Amber
Format:Paperback
I have yet to find a YA novel about witches that I can actually connect with. For the most part, all of the witch novels I have tried so far have been boring and have had little substance. Born Wicked in particular focusses on the romantic aspect, rather than on the sisters' actual powers, since the sisters are meant to be hiding them.

I really liked the author's take on New England. The world building was actually pretty good, and if the correct thought had been put into it, I think the Brothers going after witches could have been quite exciting. Unfortunately it fell rather flat because the main character, Cate, wasn't making any new discoveries that mattered. She wasn't doing much of anything.

The whole book was very boring. I was quite excited by the beginning because a lot of people liked this book, and I really liked the world the book was set in. If you're looking for action, then you should pass on this. I was hoping for some witchy action and some awesome magical showdowns, like Charmed, but instead this was as dull as Bonnie Bennett's (non existent) storyline in seasons two and three of TVD.

Cate was a dull main character to read about. Was she rebellious? No. Was she making an impact on people's lives, or her town? No. Was she at all interesting? No. Does she do awesome things with her powers? No. Is she a special snowflake? N-Yes! I honestly cannot think of one moment where I was rooting for Cate. All she did was whine and worry and think about boys. It was very cliché, and very grating.

There is a slight love triangle. One guy wants to propose to Cate before her time is up, but Cate likes Finn, the gardener. I didn't care for either romance because it was BORING. That's really the theme of this book. During the romantic scenes I was falling asleep. In fact, I was falling asleep throughout most of the book, but the romantic scenes were the most boring of all of them. At least there was a tiny bit of drama and world building in the other scenes.

I wouldn't recommend Born Wicked because... well, because it's dull. I won't continue reading the series, because I feel like if the first book didn't have any action then the second one won't either. And I am sorry this review isn't very in-depth. It's just I have nothing to talk about!
