Velvet Ball and The Broken Fairy (Series Novel)

I was looking for a good book for boys and found this great adventure novel about a twelve-year-old boy called Thom. He's the son of a secret agent and when his father doesn't come home for a few days, Thom becomes suspicious and breaks into his father's office. When he finds his dad's mobile phone, he realises something bad must have happened to him, after all, he's a secret agent and would never go anywhere without it. Plus he wouldn't leave Thom at home alone without contact.

Thom, his best friend, and his friend's teenage sister catch a plane to Ireland in search of clues. How they manage this is hilarious, and the dialogue is fantastic. The author has captured the voice of young adults in a witty and funny way, and with all the disgusting things that kids love. Through the plots, the kids insult each other and squabble, but are always there for each other when they're needed.

On their travels, the kids come up with a way to buy whatever they need, which adds more humour to the story. While hunting for the missing secret agent, they turn themselves into little agents in a funny and believable way. They meet dangerous villains and colourful characters as they get into more and more danger and mischief. The antics of these kids will have the reader on the edge of their seats, keeping them turning the page to see what happens next.

Hilly, the teenage girl, is absolutely hilarious. I love the way the author has made her real. While Thom and his friend are searching for Thom's father, Hilly, a klutz of a girl with attitude, who now has access to money and travel, does what any teenage girl would. This annoys the boys and they think she's a big pain in the butt.

I don't want to give the plots away, so I'll just say that this story will keep the reader entertained right to the exciting end. I highly recommend it for boys and girls of all ages. It's a great read even for adults and I hope the author will write a sequel. I'll sure be looking out for one.

My child loved it 15 Feb 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
My 9-year-old is a fussy reader who doesn't like most books I buy. I took a chance on Alex Gonzo, Royal Spy given its cheap price and the great cover and I'm so happy I did. The story's fantastic: three children go on a mission to solve the mystery of a missing spy. But it's how they get there that kept me and my child laughing all the way through. Our favourite character was Hilly, the teenage girl, with diva attitude. I thought it cute how the children worked together and looked out for each other. The importance of friendship and teamwork was emphasised throughout the plot, which is something I want my child to learn. The main character, Thom, is a lovely boy my child could relate to and the clue-searching part was well-developed and kept us guessing what'd happen next.
I'll be watching out for more books by this author, not least because my child has asked for the next book in the series. I hope there's going to be more.

Awesome book!
I would highly recommend this to any reader - boy or girl. The story is action-packed, with a humour entwined throughout the characters and plot. A very enjoyable, imaginative read that constantly has you trying to guess what's going to happen. You won't be able to put this book down.
Hopefully this is the first of a great series!
I look forward to reading more novels from this author.

I 'Spy' The Perfect Christmas Present! 15 Dec 2010
By Donna Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was looking for the perfect Christmas present for my children's kindle-and I found it! This book will capture the attention and imagination of a wide variety of readers. I guarantee it will have you and your kids laughing out loud. I read it in a few days and LOVED it. Throm's dad has gone missing. After some digging, Throm learns that his dad's top secret mission might've went wrong while he was trying to take down an art thief. What's a twelve year boy supposed to do when being a secret spy runs in his DNA? He engages on `his own action-packed mission' taking on the identity of his dad who happens to be a royal spy. And what fun would a mission be without two hilarious side kicks-his best friend, Danny, and Danny's sister, Hilly? They become the masters of disguise and use their sharp wit and charm to obtain clues that lead them closer to Throm's dad. This hilarious adventure eventually leads them to Ireland-the ever splendid Emerald Isle, land of endless green. They're taken on all kinds of different twists and turns along the way, even tangling with dangerous villains. The way they gather intelligence and travel incognito gives James Bond 007 a run for his money. I couldn't stop laughing the entire time because these characters are so darn funny and the situations they get themselves into are hysterical. This author has mastered the art of telling stories that are enjoyable to children and adults alike. All I can say is that I'm hooked and I know my kids will be too! I cannot wait until Christmas day!

Fast-paced and funny adventure 29 Dec 2010
By Peggy Tibbetts - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Twelve-year old Thomasius Anastasius Gonzo has a big name and an even bigger problem. His dad has been missing for three days and if doesn't want to be sent off to live with his Aunt Becky, he's going to have to find him. When Thom and his friends, Danny and Hilly break into his dad's office, they get the surprise of their lives. Mr. Gonzo is not a sales clerk or a doctor. He's a spy. Armed with his dad's credentials, cell phone and credit card, Thom enlists the help of Danny and Hilly on a daring search and rescue to Ireland. Their keen instincts and quick wits get them in and out of trouble along the way. Scott makes clever use of the characters' humorous banter and zany antics to spice things up. "Spy Kidz" is a fast-paced and funny adventure middle grade readers will definitely enjoy.
