Book Description

9 Oct 2007

Bear Grylls is no stranger to extremes. During a three-year stint in the SAS he was involved in a horrific parachuting accident in Africa and broke his back in three places. Months of rehabilitation followed but, never losing sight of his childhood dream of climbing Everest, Bear went on to become the youngest Briton ever to reach the summit and survive. It was a close-run thing, however, as during the descent he was almost killed in a crevasse, his life saved only by his team-mate and a rope. In 2003 Bear completed another world-record-breaking expedition, leading his team through freezing spray and icebergs across the North Atlantic Ocean in a small inflatable boat. More drama followed as Bear, a karate black belt, set out to show the viewers of Channel 4 what it is really like to complete the gruelling basic training of the Foreign Legion.

Now, in Born Survivor which accompanies a brand new eight-part series for Channel 4, the world's ultimate survivor shows us how to stay alive in the most unforgiving conditions on Earth. From crossing piranha-infested rivers and finding fresh food to building bush fires and fighting off grizzly bears - all manner of survival techniques from our most dangerous environments are covered. So, whether you find yourself stranded on a desert island in the Pacific, lost in the Lake District, or stuck in the snow on Greenland, once you've read this book, you too will be able to beat the elements and survive the wild.

Bear Grylls is no stranger to extremes. Trained by the British SAS to stay alive in some of the most inhospitable places of earth, in 1996 he suffered a horrendous parachuting accident that left his back broken in three places. Now, in Born Survivor, Bear shows us how, armed with the correct know-how and a determination to stay alive, all of us have the potential to beat the elements in even the bleakest of situations. From crossing piranha-infested rivers and killing deadly snakes to finding water in even the harshest deserts and fighting off grizzly bears - all manner of survival techniques from our most dangerous environments and covered.

So, whether you find yourself stranded on a high mountain, marooned on a desert island, abandoned in a rainforest or lost in the snowy outbacks of Alaska, once you've read this book, you too will be able top tackle the wilderness ... and survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bear Grylls is the BEST! 22 April 2007
Format:Hardcover
As a huge fan of Bear Grylls and his Born Survivor (man Vs Wild) Tv show, I HAD to buy this book. On receiving the book and flicking through it, I was very to have bought it. The book is not the typical book that you might want to read cover to cover in an organised fashion, but is more of an A-Z on survival techniques and skills. In the book, Grylls teaches tricks on how to survive in different environments and situations, ocassionaly dipping into his own personal experiences.

The book is choc-a-block with diagrams, pictures and photos from the TV series, which assist the narrative in explaining how to implement several techniques. The book further details useful resources in each situation - ie which leaves are good for building things, where you can find water in nature etc.

If you enjoyed the TV series, you will not be disappointed by the book. It is the perfect complement to the TV show and goes further into explaining the techniques which Grylls used in it.

I cannot wait to put several things into practice when I next go roughing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Coffee Table Material 26 July 2007
Format:Hardcover
This is the perfect book if you don't want to have to talk to any male member of your household - because they have their face buried in this book. It's full of interesting, and some gross, facts and ways to survive in any - and I truely mean any dangerous and life threatening situation you may find yourself in. In fact for the most of it, I NEVER want to be in any of those situations - but at least I'll know what to do if I get bitten by a snake, attacked by a bear or lost at sea.
