I read the novella Out of Control which appeared in the 2013 multi-author antho, Predatory, and which introduced the world of the Sentinels. Though that tale had a baddie who met his end a little too quickly and conveniently, I had hopes for this new series featuring paranormals born to both paranormal and human parents, and inhabiting a complex that sounded a bit like Xavier's mansion in the X-Men movies, and having similar gifts/abilities to the 'mutants' - and then I went and read this tale that was more mouth than trousers.

The first glaring mistake is that the female on the cover looks nothing like Callie, the lead from this tale, but instead is more like the description of her best friend, Serra or even the Valhalla leader, The Mave. I mean, Callie's meant to have short, dark red spiky hair, whereas Serra is described as having a mane of red hair and wearing leather pants and barely-there tops...

The second is that the tale had lots of build up then turned entirely anticlimactic in its ending, with the baddie/s taken out so conveniently and easily, without any grave danger and without any fighting/end of the world/real apocalyptic threats. Oh, don't get me wrong, as said threats were intimated and in fact, were the reasons the leads were on their quest, but the end was a total cop-out, as was what happened to Duncan, the male lead.

Also (a personal irritation, admittedly) throughout the book, the word 'god' is used as a name, not a common noun, but doesn't appear in capitals, which threw me. Apparently, 'good grammar' states that in this context, the word should be 'God' - unless the author's an atheist (and possibly projecting her views, hmmm?).

this is the first book in Alexandra ivy's 'Sentinels' series, that is unless you count the short story in the anthology'Predatory'.i read that story first and had high hopes for this series.i truly love her 'Guardians of eternity' series, but the start of this one left me somewhat disappointed.
synopsis:
Sergeant Duncan O'Conner has seen it all before. Beautiful erotic dancer, murdered at home, no suspect, no motive. But there's one clue: she's missing her heart. It's enough to make the hard-bitten Kansas City cop enlist the help of a necro--one of the dead-channelling freaks who live in the domed city of nearby Valhalla. It's a long shot, but desperate crimes call for desparate
Unlike the other "high-bloods" in Valhalla, Callie Brown considers her abilities a gift, not a curse. But when she reads the dancer's final thoughts, she senses a powerful presence blocking her vision. This is no ordinary homicide. This is the work of a legendary necromancer who controls souls. A ravenous force that will put Callie's skills to the test, O'Conner's career at risk, and both their hearts on the line. . .literally
review:
the story is sound and the foundation for this series is set, but the characters just weren't engaging enough and at times the book did seem to drag.for me it says something when the main characters in the far shorter story in an anthology are far better than those in this full-length book.i think perhaps too much focus was put on setting up the foundation for the series than on the actual characters in the book. i am aware that many a series start like this though.
nevertheless, the overall plot is actually good and the world Ms Ivy has created is sound and interesting.i just hope that now she has set the scene more focus will be put on creating more engaging characters.i await the next installment!
if this is the genre of book you like i would,if you already have not, recommend this authors'Guardian's of Eternity' series.

Alexandra ivy is one of my favourite authors but I feel so let down by this story, I feel as if the author has tried too hard to build this new world between high bloods and humans that she has missed the mark on good characterisation, they were boring and 2 dimensional, duncan came across like a boring sap nothing like the alpha males alexandra ivy usually writes, callie was okay, fane and wolfe were more interesting than the main characters.

The story seemed to lack depth as if the author was trying to get the new world she has made accross but insted missed writing good action scenes that would have made the story better and the romance scenes fell totally flat.

This story bored me, some parts more than others and I struggled to read it I wanted to give up a few times but I persevered but I still felt disapointed with it so I wont be pre ordering the next in the series.

The first book in the Sentinels series is an exciting and mesmerizing read.

Hard bitten Kansas City cop Sergeant Duncan O'Connor enlists the help of a necro - one of the dead-channeling freaks from nearby Valhalla - when a beautiful erotic dancer is found murdered and the only clue is that she's missing her heart. "High-Blood" Callie Brown senses a powerful presence in the mind of the dancer's mind and realizes this was on ordinary homicide. With both their hearts and their lives on line, O'Connor and Callie`s skills will be put to the test by a legendary necromancer who can control souls.

This steady to fast paced plot engages the reader from the very beginning and keeps their attention to the end. The reader brings this intriguing story to life with vivid images, action, and bewitching characters that capture the imagination. The author uses well known as well as unique conflicts and drama to give the story lots of depth and ensures that the reader will want to know more. The action and battle scenes are well written and believable and make the reader feel as if they are right there and part of the story.

The attraction between Callie and Duncan radiates heat from every page and the sex scenes rock the very foundations. The author brings the romance, passion and emotions to life with intense detail that makes easy to relate to the characters and understand their motivations.

This fascinating and entertaining world captures the imagination with unique concepts, enchanting characters, endless possibilities and surprises that keep the reader guessing. I love Alexandra Ivy's Guardian of Eternity series and I was looking forward to reading this one and while I must say it is totally different from the Guardians, it is just as mesmerizing and entertaining and I can't wait for the next one.
