Sorry that was a dreadful pun, however it is also true. I was recommended to Deer Tick after reading about how well they went down last year at the SXSW Festival, which has given us the likes of The Felice Brothers. I was interested after two listenings and now find it is one of my most listened to albums. It has a mix of styles that seem to stretch from influences such as Chuck Berry to true Americana ala Son Volt etc.
The vocals do appear to be a bit Dropkick Murphy's but are far more developed than that and the songs are all stand out in thier own ways. I give you 'Song About a Man' which takes the Dylanesque woe is me mix and turns it around with lyrics like 'How can a man feel anything, when all he's ever had is sympathy'. The open track 'Easy' is another example of seeing a worn out topic and turninmg it around. Track 10 is great and only available on the album, I think a reason for this is that it contains a secret track. This is an apparently drunken version of 'Eileen Godd Night', with beer cans being opened into the microphones and it is just brilliant. I cant wait to seee them when they tour later in the UK in 2009 - truly unmissable.

The search for the best album of 2009 ends here , Deer Tick have nailed it , to the wall .
This is a superb little beauty which seems very familiar to long term Americana lovers (musically) on the first few plays but has enough invention in the songs to make it somehow all seem new , fresh and exciting . The lead singers voice may be an acquired taste but you soon get used to it and he delivers his vocals with real passion and you totally buy into his world .
i really do feel that this is a new classic in the genre and hope to hear more from this great band in the near future , wonderful stuff .

There has no doubt been a resurgence of the `folk' element creeping its way back into popular music over the last three years or so and it seems it has become habitual to generalise some of the more notable breakthroughs into convoluted sub-genres; Fleet Foxes as ambient-American-folk, Mumford and Sons as Celtic-pop-ragtime-folk, even Vampire Weekend as Balkan-Calypso-indie-pop-folk. What Born on Flag Day offers the listener is simple; it's a classic case of country-rock and roll-blues-indie-folk, damn it, its happened again. However what Deer Tick manage to achieve in this album, unlike other albums of the contemporary folk persuasion, is that they indubitably homage each contributing style. Born on Flag Day is seamlessly traverses its influences, of which it wears on its sleeve, as you are dropped in to small slices of quintessential elements of both classic and contemporary American popular music. From the dramatic purity of Smith Hill, to the swinging energy of Straight Into A Storm within the space of three tracks is achieved in a way that somehow is not just coherent but in fact manages to enhance the lucidity of the album. This album will not, nor was it designed to, revolutionise popular music instead what Born on Flag Day offers is a sincere well judged piece of nostalgia with just enough edge to entice a younger listener without the 'alternative' tag having to be lacquered all over it. If I were a space time continuum defying gig promoter I would be confident that with the material from this album Deer Tick could comfortably slot into a bill between Bill Monroe and Bon Iver, or Creedence and Cash, or Buddy Holly and Bright Eyes...in fact, I think I hear my calling.
