Book Description

2 Aug 2010
Meet Dave Hazard; world class martial artist. A 7th dan black belt in Shotokan karate, he's as respected in the tough streets, bars and clubs of the East End of London as he is in the best karate dojo in Japan. His reputation is legendary. He's faced down many tough challenges as a street fighter but also as a mentor and teacher. As a member of the Great British karate team, Dave fought for his country, facing some of the world's leading martial artists in both competition and the highly dangerous and demanding sparring of the dojo, where no rules apply...Born into a harsh world which demanded that you learn how to look after yourself and those around you, Dave Hazrd grew into a complex and extraordinary man. The ups and downs of his remarkable life, and the challenges he's overcome throughout it, prove he is truly a force to be reckoned with - a living embodiment of the power of the mind as well as the fist.

5.0 out of 5 stars nothing like the truth 31 Oct 2007
Format:Hardcover
I've trained with him, drank with him (when he was drinking) and love him like a brother. He's the real thing and so is his book. It's written like he talks and he talks the truth. This is a wonderful insight into a person and a way of life that movies can only dream of. It's a gripping story, well-told and moving. A great read. It makes you laugh. It makes you cry. It's a remarkable journey and there's something for every one of us inside it's pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read! 6 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
A brilliant book from, in my view, the best Shotokan instructor in Europe. Dave says it like it is, as is his way and I just couldn't put the book down. Not only is he a great karate instructor but also a great friend and like a true friend he stood by me when the chips were down. Something I'll never forget. The book is an honest insight into Dave's very eventful life and although sometimes sad, is also extremely funny in parts. Put this book on your Christmas list, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Day's 11 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover
I first met Sensei in 1982 at a course as a yellow belt and hearing that he trained in Japan, I plucked the courage to ask him how l could get to Japan..... Back came the philosophical answer "by aeroplane" Oss Sensei I replied!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is Dave no frills, straight to the point, and that is how he tells it in his book That meeting started a relationship that is now 25 years old and as the previous reviews also acknowledge Dave is not just my Sensei, more importantly he is my and my families friend. I am honoured to be one of the instructors he stays with when teaching for me, and in the past shared a drink or two with him (My wife lisa related to the story of Mary O'Brien ordering us to bed like scalded kids Drunk). How nice it is to have all the stories and more that l have heard in the past put into one volume and read it sober. It made me laugh in public, people must have thought me crazy, and it brought a tear to my eye because it is Dave's story as he is, honest and no frills. If you know Dave then you will read this book if you don't know him do yourself a favour read it. Its not a karate book, it is a book about the life of one of the best non Japanese Karate instructors there is. I would also like to thank Chris Parker for the difficult task of getting Dave to put it all down I bet that was not easy Chris!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and to Mick Dewey for introducing Dave's teaching to us, and for being part of so many of the good stories.
Happy Day's
