Product Description

Product Description

Among the ethnic gangs that rule America's inner cities, none has had the impact of the Jamaican posses. Spawned in the ghettos of Kingston as mercenary street-fighters for the island's politicians, the posses began migrating to the United States in the early 1980s, just in time to catch and ride the crack wave as it engulfed the country. Laurie Gunst's provocative expose of the Jamaican politicians' role in creating this problem is also a moving and compelling tale of suffering and exploitation.

Born Fi' Dead 7 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback
A truly exceptional look into how, where and why 'Yardies' has taken their 'trade' across Europe and the United States. This books goes back to the early days in Jamaica where the politicians got these gunmen on the road to where they are today. A must read or anyone interested in the history of Jamaica's gun culture.

I read this book while I was on holiday not the best thing to do as it is very political so not an easy going beach book... Although saying that I feel that this book gave me an insight into the government and the drug gangs that have given Jamaica a bad name.... A good read for anyone intrested in the background of Jamaica

This PhD study is terrifyingly precise. You wonder if Gunst was aware of the danger her thesis created for her subjects and informants. Difficult to have sympathy for the brutalised and brutalising but even so this has to be some kind of betrayal?
