Product Description

Product Description
Dimple doesn't know what to think. Her parents are from India, and she's spent years rebelling against their traditions. Now everything Indian is suddenly hip - even her best friend Gwyn has a bindi as an accessory. Dimple doesn't feel either Indian or American, she feels both. Mainly, she just feels confused...To make matters worse, Dimple's parents are trying to set her up with a "suitable boy." Their first meeting is a disaster, but then she bumps into him again at a club - where he's the DJ. Suddenly he becomes suitable because of his sheer unsuitability. Trouble is, Gwyn seems to think so too...Born Confused is a touching and funny novel about family, friendship and love, and about bringing together two cultures without falling apart yourself in the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Review for Mrs. Mkinsi, 11 Oct 2003
Dimple Lala has never fit in. Originally from India, she has lived in New Jersey for her whole life. From the beginning, she was born "turned around" and this caused her mother "twelve treacherous hours of painful labor." She continues resisting her parent’s traditions for sixteen years, but when she turns seventeen, she does not know who she is and exactly where she is from. Finally, after many years of avoiding her identity, she is confronted with her problem when her parents encourage her to date a "suitable boy" for marriage. Now Dimple, on her journey to adulthood and self-actualization, is directly faced with a cultural problem that she needs to come to terms with. The novel does not only center around this boy, but also around her relatives that help her through her problems. Her passion for photography also helps Dimple with day to day life and the reader can learn more about this art. This novel is comprised of cultural conflicts as well as friendship and relationship problems that eventually lead Dimple to finding out who she is and where she comes from.

You do not have to be from India to enjoy this captivating and enticing, realistic story that many can relate to. It is a clash between an American girl and her Indian origins that occurs in this novel. Dimple goes through similar problems that teenagers face, but this compelling novel also incorporates finding one’s culture as well as identity. Tanuja Desai Hidier takes an interesting approach to intrigue the reader with a mix of the Indian and American culture. This novel brings up worthwhile questions to think about even after you have finished it. Absorbing, questioning, and appealing, Born Confused not only makes you think about who you are, but where you are from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read, 25 Feb 2006
By OggyMog (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Born Confused (Paperback)
I picked this book last easter needing a soppy teenage novel to fill the days instead (thankfully)i gained a book that will never leave me. Funny, emotive, with a believable protagonist who does what we all do one time or another in our lives, learn something new about herself and enviorment. She experiences love, dilemas, desires and learns the truth. I would recommend this book to anyone, you don't have to be of a particular race to enjoy and understand the book, as may be suggested due to the cover, 'Born Confused' deals with universal themes, so all you have to do is love a good story because that is what you will get:)

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing and insightful read, 20 Aug 2003
By Ms. N. Roncevic (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I must say that this is the best novel I have read in a long time. It is about finding yourself when you don't seem to belong anywhere. It is about being proud of your roots and Dimple realises that. This book is a must-read for anyone who is culturally challenged or has been raised in the West but wasn't necessarily born there. The author sends across a clear message, and without me giving away what that is, I think you would be disappointed if you didn't pick Born Confused as your year's choice.
