an excellent collection of songs and could-be singles 14 Aug 2000
By Ana Ng - Published on Amazon.com
This is not a CD you'll just want to throw on and listen to end to end. The appeal of this album is that it's really a collection of several songs that should have been stand-alone singles, several really good songs that would not have fit in on an artist's album, a few rarities and a couple songs that, at the very least, are better than what MTV puts into rotation. R.E.M. fans should head for "photograph". Though it guests Natalie Merchant, it really is one of R.E.M.'s finest, a great little slice of pop that wouldn't have sounded out of place on "Out of Time". For Tom Waits fans, an early version of "filipino box spring hog" is a nifty little gem that you'll not find elsewhere.Lucinda Williams turns in "pancakes", not one of her most essential tunes, but a fun little ditty anyway.Pavement brings "greenlander", another good b-side that definitely is one of the stand-outs here. Another highlight, the Cowboy Junkies "lost my driving wheel" is most certainly a keeper, if you dig their sound. The now defuct Soundgarden are also here with "HIV baby",not their best, but also otherwise hard to find. Matthew Sweet has a live cover of the Beatles tune "she said, she said",not really an improvement on the original but at least he didn't mangle it. Also on the disc, less impressive songs by Sugar, the mekons,John Trudell,NRBQ,and helmet. Definitely worth the reduced price, especially if you like to create your own mix tapes as I do.
