Product Description

Product Description
Borley Rectory in Essex, built in 1862, should have been an ordinary Victorian clergyman's house. However, just a year after its construction, unexplained footsteps were heard within the house, and from 1900 until it burned down in 1939 numerous paranormal phenomena, including phantom coaches and shattering windows, were observed. In 1929 the house was investigated by the Daily Mail and paranormal researcher Harry Price, and it was he who called it 'the most haunted house in England.' Price also took out a lease of the rectory from 1937 to 1938, recruiting forty-eight 'official observers' to monitor occurences. After his death in 1948, the water was muddied by claims that Price's findings were not genuine paranormal activity, and ever since there has been a debate over what really went on at Borley Rectory. Paul Adams, Eddie Brazil and Peter Underwood here present a comprehensive guide to the history of the house and the ghostly (or not) goings-on there.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only Borley book you need, 5 Jun 2009
By Mr. R. P. Richardson "adanaman" (Northolt, Middlesex UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This volume would perhaps be more aptly titled "The Borley Encyclopaedia". It brings together a vast amount of information from disparate sources, including other published works, interviews, newspaper reports and radio & TV features. It's exhaustive and largely unbiased.

The book contains substantial biographies of the main players in the Borley drama, but also carries succinct details of almost every other individual with connections to the alleged hauntings. You'll find entries detailing the whereabouts of the Borley Bell, the old gate posts and the pump handle from the yard, together with newly-drawn floor plans, containing more detail than ever before. There are comparative ground plans of the Rectory site, then and now and a wealth of photographs, some never before published. Nothing is sensationalised, and the facts are presented in a rational style.

For newcomers to the Borley saga, this is the ideal introduction, but remember, as the authors point out at the very beginning of this tome, the villagers don't appreciate strangers trampling through their gardens hunting for the phantom nun.

Treat this tiny Essex village and its residents with respect and courtesy and Borley (if you can find the place) will provide a pleasant summer - or winter - excursion. Just don't mention the former Rectory to any of the locals . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Anthology!, 18 Jun 2009
By B. Perkins (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Put quite simply, one would be very hard pressed to find another work on this famous (and infamous) paranormal site. The authors have left no stone unturned in their efforts to bring the story up to date and bring a fresh outlook to what must be one of the most written about haunted sites in the world. Aimed at the enthusiast and newcomer alike the book is an undoubted triumph of research and anecdote which should now be viewed as the definitive work on the subject. For anyone interested in the paranormal or for those who wish to know more about this intriguing case I would urge you to purchase a copy - you will not be disappointed!
