Product Description

CD Description

Tom Russell's 4th release for Hightone Records and the follow-up to his highly acclaimed hit album "The Man From God Knows Where". "Borderland" is Russell's edgiest, most electric album to date and features 11 new songs including two co-written with Dave Alvin. The songs on "Borderland" examine Russell's relocation to the frontier of El Paso-Juarez and delve more personally into the emotional borderline between the sexes. The album rocks, without sacrificing the roots element that Russell is known for. Musicians on "Borderland" include Gurf Morlix on slide guitar and bass, he also produced the album, Andrew Hardin on guitars, Ian McLagan on B3 organ, Joel Guzman on accordion, Jimmy LaFave and Eliza Gilkyson on backing vocals.Tom Russell continues to break new ground as a highly acclaimed songwriter and performer.

This latest album by Tom Russell is stunning. The songs are so crisp and raw that only a decent Hi-Fi would do it justice. I have met Tom Russell while working at a Country music radio station in UK a few years back. He was a warm and friendly guy, and his talent walked into the room swifter than it takes to say 'Americana Classic'. This expertly recorded selection of border songs has Tom's raw vocals up front. Everything about this CD is charming, from the beautiful 'paperback', artistic CD cover to the top notch recording and selection of fine songs, Tom Russell really has produced a gem. You will love this album if you love top Americana artists with raw talent.

'Borderland' finds Tom on top form and is his best album to date. The albums starts off with 'Touch of Evil'; a sublime ballad about the Orson Wells classic film. 'Down The Rio Grande' is a slow lament about a man driving through New Mexico and Texas in search of a loved one. This track was co-written with Dave Alvin and his version appears on his 'Ashgrove' album. Tom really kicks things off with 'When Sinatra Played Juarez'; a foot stomping classic with accordion solos - and one of the albums highlights.

As the album rocks on you begin to notice the frequent references to Juarez (I started to count these once but gave up at thirty). You begin to wonder whether 'Juarez' would have been a better title for the album.

Throughout the album Tom is accompanied by Andrew Hardin on guitar. The pinnacle being his playing on 'The Next Thing Smokin''. Other tracks on the include 'Let It Go', which has a more mainstream country sound, and 'What Work Is' which reminds me of Toms earlier work.

If you liked the more recent 'Indians Cowboys Horses Dogs' you will love this album. But for me 'Borderland' is the more appealing of the two. I would recommend this album to any Tom fan.

There's not a bad track on this CD. Great songs, great vocals, geat backing.

Highlights include "Touch Of Evil", "Let It Go" and "When Sinatra Played Juarez". The latter is usually a highlight of Tom's live shows.

Don't be put off if you hear Tom Russell described as a "Country Artist" -there's plenty here for people who usually loathe country music.
