4.0 out of 5 stars Not Dissapointed., 25 Mar 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Bops Babes Booze and Bovver (Audio CD)
Despite being an avid listner of The Pogues and Shane MacGowans latter band The Popes, I wasn't quite sure what to expect with Bops, Babes Booze & Bovver. Whats clear within a few tracks is the punk influence of groups such as The Sex Pistols. Shane's in excellent form throughout this CD, both vocally (before drink & drugs kicked in) and lyrically which are typical punk rants and raves. Most of the ten tracks are fast-paced, aggressive and catchy with a good beat, apart from the superb slow contrast of Gabrielle. Personal favorites include All The Time in The World, Gabrielle, King Of The Bop and Stavordale RD, N5. This is quite unlike anything released with The Pogues (although typically many of the lyrics are the usual Shane poetry), and its fresh to hear Shane in punk rockabilly mode. Although short in length this is an excellent CD for any MacGowan or punk fan to add to their collection. Highly Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bops, Babes, Booze, Bovver and Shane MacGowan, 14 Jan 2008
This review is from: Bops Babes Booze and Bovver (Audio CD)
Originally released in 1987 as The Pogues reached the height of their popularity this is an anthology of Shane MacGowan's first bid for international infamy. The Nips were originally called The Nipple Erectors but shortened it to secure valuable airplay after signing a record contract, they needn't have bovvered.

Shane, as Shaun O' Hooligan, had been a visible face of the original London Punk scene famously having an ear cutting episode at a Clash concert reported in the NME. Any documentary of the embryonic Punk scene will have Shane highly visible in a Union Jack which as an Irish Republican he thought as being much in the same way as his English contemporise wore their swastikas'.

After the initial wave of Punk bands fell away Shane rejected the fourth rate trip that was paraded as the second wave of Punk and instead tried to blend Punk Rock with Rockabilly to create Punkabilly. The results are to be found on the collection.

The early sessions are predictable and fairly poor but the last single Gabrielle b/w Vengeance is fantastic and not only a precursor as to what would eventually follow with Shane's writing for The Pogues but also worth the price of admission alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'He'd Never Been Able To Shoot You If You'd Seen Him', 30 Jun 2008

Paul Ess. (Holywell, N.Wales,UK.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bops Babes Booze and Bovver (Audio CD)
The Nipple Erectors and then (presumably under record company pressure and delusions of respectability) the Nips, were Shane MacGowan's first group, and this is a cracking little collection of ultra-rare cuts which initially appeared as singles and lp tracks way back in the late 70's.

It's a colourful, angry, Stonesy sound with irresistibly twangy rockabilly guitar, and it'll come as a surprise to those familiar with MacGowan's slurry (and VASTLY over-rated!) later work, to hear him here, alert and alive, coming on like a junior Adam Faith with clarity and direction.

As was de rigeur at the time, this is a caveman music, bold and true, and some of MacGowan's lyrics are sure to raise an eyebrow in these killjoy PC times:
"Just shut up and lay on the bed,
When I'm finished with you I'm gonna break his head.."

Long-lost singles 'Gabrielle' and 'All the Time in the World' are high-points, but there's a rough and tuneful quality to most of 'Bops, Babes, Booze and Bovver'.

It's a bit short, but makes up for that with consistency and passion, and there's a brill picture of the band in Teddy-boy gear (just on their way to slash some cinema seats no doubt, and Gordon in the Government thinks knife crime is a new thing..); MacGowan looking not a day over 12, but still sewer-fungus ugly, is worth the (ridiculously cheap) price alone.
Looking at the seconds-from-death-shambles he is now, it's nice to see him bouncy and agile, launching himself and his crazy harmonica into this ultra-cool and pumped-up selection.

As yer man says (without the merest hint of an Irish accent..!):
"Just lie back and think of England,
Gonna put my hands on you.."
You can treat his brilliantly cavalier cd in the same disrespectful fashion.
