5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - no other word 3 Oct 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The BBC recorded stuff has been out before in various bits and pieces but this is an excellent compilation Hoever, its the DVD at the end that seals it though. I knew this stuff must be in dusty archives somewhere but the 4th disc here is a DVD of the OGWT footage and for that alone its worth the price !!

Amazing to see and hear this wonderful footage and the all too brief but neverthe less excellent live performances of a massively underrated band featuring a true genius guitarist and singer songwriter - even to this day too ! . if there were six stars for this product, I would happily tick them all

delighted - absolutely

5.0 out of 5 stars Twilight Capers 21 Oct 2013

If you ever listened to John Peel during the Seventies, then you will know all about the power, and prowess of Bill Nelsons Be Bop Deluxe. This fine collection, encapsulates this era of the band fantastically well, with sessions from 1974,1976,and 1977.The set is finished off with a DVD which captures the Old Grey Whistle Test and Sight & Sound performances.
A better resume, you could never wish to have from The Beeb, and the playing is simply top class, treat yourself to an Adventure In A Yorkshire Landscape...

4.0 out of 5 stars Must Have for the Be Bop Deluxe Fan 3 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having been a fan of both Be Bop and Bill Nelson for more years than I can count, this was a very necessary set for me to buy! And I was not disappointed. The recordings are first rate, sound quality is excellent. The song selection is also very nice, lots of the hits are here. The DVD that is included is also excellent as it has a lot of footage of the band from Old Grey Whistle Test and them actually performing live and not lip syncing. Also by buying from the Amazon UK site, I saved about $20.00 from what Amazon US was charging! If you are a fan you will not be disappointed!

My initial interest in Be Bop Deluxe and Bill Nelson came via his production work for the Skids and Live! In The Air Age was the album that introduced me to Be Bop Deluxe. So this long awaited material from much the same period reinforces how brilliant a band they were and what a totally underrated guitarist Bill is. His playing is nothing short of inspired and it's reassuring to hear all the elements Stuart Adamson picked up on as his inspiration.

This covers the full period in Be Bop's development and it's interesting to hear (and see) the new wave influence on later stuff like Superenigmatix, whilst Islands of the Dead is a personal favourite.

Following Bill's recent career and knowing how reluctant he is to look at the past too much, his sleeve notes which mention a preference for looking through the windscreen but acknowledging the rear view mirror must at least give him a sense of satisfaction and pride in this work; it's great to see and hear a youthful Bill brimming with confidence and energy, and mention must be made of the band who are terrific, with Charlie Tumahi in particular providing some fine backing vocals, bass and 'enthusiasm'!

For fans of great guitar work from one of Britain's best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be Bop at the Beeb 3 Oct 2013
By Smitty Werbenjaegermanjensen (real name) TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Wow! This is a really welcome addition to the Be Bop Deluxe collection, especially considering the lack of a remastered Live in the Air Age.

First off, this is the only place, outside of bootlegs, that I have been able to hear the MK 1 Be Bop lineup in concert. Stunning! They really were good, much better than I would have expected considering the revamp of the band after the first album. The versions of the Axe Victim songs they deliver here really zing along and are superior to the studio versions because of the added energy of the gig. Bills guitar work is jaw droppingly good and his voice strong and clear throughout. It is remarkable that they were not bigger at the time.

Secondly, this collection spans a 4 year period and the development of Bill Nelsons idea of what he wanted to play and put out there can be heard as the band evolve and tighten up in the live setting. I like where they ended up, Superenigmatix etc... and the versions on this are no slouches.

Being recorded live, warts and all, to use a phrase, is a real test of a band. There is the odd out of tune bit of keyboard work here and there, which is really surprising, but overall the sound is that of a well honed unit. Sound quality is varied, but is vastly superior to the bootlegs and is nicely mastered, no harsh over compressed and over-equed ear shredding cymbals etc....Everyone can be heard clearly. The four John Peel Sessions are superb, really well recorded and in most cases the songs really belt along and are, in my opinion, better that the studio versions.

The dvd is a real stunner! I have never seen any footage of Be Bop Deluxe in concert before and this was a real eye opener. Did folk really wear flares that wide in public? Bills Jean Cocteau knitted jumper is a fashion crime!
