I've read pretty much all the Angel books, and this one's on a par with most of them. It's lost a certain something (mainly the Rules of Life) as Angel has mellowed (slightly) over the years, but the story, humour and characterisation are as sharp and accurate as ever. A good read for pretty much anyone - you don't need to have read the rest of the series to enjoy this one.

I don't care what bus drivers say, this is a brilliant book. It has an edge. it is funny, tragic, exciting, thought provoking - what more could you want. Any one who thinks this book isn't up to the author's usual standard needs their head examining. This is a good book, well worth reading, loaded with laughs and very entertaining. Go buy it...but don't get caught reading it on the bus....

Angel is a bit of a chancer who is currently working for his wife by driving around models. However, one of his sidelines is a little PI work. He is hired to uncover a large booze smuggling ring that has made Kent a no go area for breweries. On his travels Angel comes across some eccentric pub dwellers as well as vicious gangsters. Can he find who is supplying the booze?
'Bootlegged Angel' is the first in the series that I have read and I thought it was great. The character of Angel himself comes across as worldly wise and smart. Ripley has also filled the book with great side characters that made the book a fun read.
I felt that the book started a bit too slowly with Angel's character keeping hinting what will happen. However, the conclusion was very satisfactory and although the journey to it meandered a bit - it was fun.
This is a good read for those that like crime comedy such as Colin Bateman.
