Surely one of the best guitarist of his generation. It has the "Mojo" in him.
The blues are sharp and hyper-musical. The high class. This is an indispensable series in a fan of blues discotheque.

Boot leg for sure, with a smile. 28 July 2009
By Charles G. Calderbank - Published on

Having bought the previous 4 volumes and really enjoying them, I knew 5 was inevitable. As fan of Johnny's playing it's nasty, hot and energized. The band is in fine form, so from a fan and performance perspective it's a good purchase. The down side is the sound quality.
Not brutal but not as good as the first 4. It of course was a recording from who knows where on who knows what what but it was not professional or ment to be released. So a true "boot" it is.
But hot live Johnny makes you forget about the sound quality. Enjoy it for the performance.
So 3 stars comes from sound quality and what seems as short disc, but the cuts are extended jams. 3rd degree and New York New York Stand out.
Johnny once again is not redundant in song selection on the disc.

Bootlegs Rule! 13 Aug. 2009

I challenge every band to put out a boot series as good as JW has. Most bands and record companies have completely missed the boat on this. If you love boots you'll love Vol 5 for all the same reasons. Great, great stuff....

This is a great series. Good recording quality and song selection. I have the entire series except volume 6, which came out recently, so I'll have that soon too. If you're a Johnny Winter fan you should get this series. He's incredible in live performances.
Johnny Winter - Live Bootleg Series Vol. 5 (Friday Music, 2009) 20 Feb. 2013
By Dimitri - Published on

Johnny is at the heights, Johnny is crazy, Johnny is doing bootleg things and this one is fifth in a row.

Live material from 80s and 90s, during the period when he was doing with guitar things that nobody had done before him, yes, that's right, nobody, in addition to his excellent capabilities as an arranger and producer, gives a true impression on what a brilliant musician Johnny Winter is.

One of those not persons but personalities who passes so deep emotion it is fair to say he not just plays and sings the Blues but he lives the Blues continuing in fifth decade is as rich in feelings as usually. From "Introduction" to the end of "Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo" this album is a highest class rocking Blues. Feeling never leaves you this guy was doing impossible.

Blues without Johnny Winter would sound differently.

Personnel: Johnny Winter (vocals, guitar); Jon Paris (harmonica, bass guitar); Bobby T. (drums).
